The most repeated coastal claim concerns enormous columns or fountains of water rising from an otherwise calm Adriatic. That variation is important. A stable, well-recorded physical event would normally retain reasonably consistent measurements, locations, times and witness details. Here, dimensions and visual features change from one retelling to another, and most accessible accounts do not provide named witnesses, signed statements, photographs, vessel logs or precise coordinates. The most defensible reading is therefore that fishermen reported several kinds of puzzling experience, but that only a few reports can be separated from the folklore that accumulated around them. Lights over water, surface disturbance and temporary equipment problems are not inherently connected. They require different evidence and may have had different causes.

The CP 2018 patrol-boat sighting

The patrol-boat incident of 9 November is the clearest individual episode because it involved a harbour authority crew rather than an anonymous witness. Around 20:45 or 21:00, CP 2018 was reportedly about four nautical miles from the coast near Silvi. The initial description reportedly compared the object to a red rocket or flare. That comparison is significant because it offers an ordinary maritime explanation rather than presenting the observation immediately as a structured craft. According to a later reproduction of the contemporary newspaper account, the crew searched the area but found no vessel that could be identified as the source. The episode remains unresolved in the limited sense that no confirmed source was identified. It is not, however, strong evidence that an object emerged physically from beneath the sea. The language used in the reported telegram described a light rising “from the sea”, which may mean that its visible path began at the horizon or waterline. At night, observers commonly have difficulty judging whether a distant light originates on the surface, just beyond the horizon or in low cloud.

The reported absence of a radar contact does not strengthen the extraordinary interpretation. A flare, small rocket, distant aircraft light or brief luminous phenomenon might produce little or no useful return on a patrol boat’s marine radar. Radar is designed primarily to display solid targets with suitable size, material, range and geometry; failing to register a four-second light does not prove that the phenomenon lacked a conventional source.

Repeated press imagery. Water columns, glowing spheres, boiling seas and failed compasses formed a vivid package. Once these motifs appeared together in newspapers and magazines, later summaries repeated them as if they described a single continuous event. Geographical compression. Reports from Pescara, Silvi, Martinsicuro and San Benedetto were often treated as occurring in one compact maritime area. From the perspective of regional folklore, that seems reasonable. For investigation, however, differences of tens of kilometres, several weeks and changing weather conditions matter greatly.

Escalation through retelling. Early descriptions of a rocket-like red light later became an object emerging from the water at extraordinary speed. Reports of disturbed water became vast columns containing dark bodies or violet illumination. Association with unrelated tragedy. Some later narratives begin with the sinking of a fishing vessel called Francesco Padre and connect the deaths of two fishermen with the onset of the mystery. This claim is difficult to assess from the available record and should not be used as evidence of anomalous activity without the original casualty investigation, medical findings and correct vessel documentation. This process does not require deliberate invention. Fishermen may sincerely have reported unusual lights or water behaviour, journalists may have accurately quoted parts of their testimony, and later writers may have tried to assemble a coherent chronology. The problem is that narrative coherence can grow even when the underlying events are unrelated.

Ordinary causes do not need to explain everything at once

No single conventional explanation neatly accounts for every claim, but that is not evidence that one extraordinary object caused them all. Because the reports differ in type and date, the most realistic approach is to consider several possible causes.

Lights apparently pacing fishing boats could have been other vessels, aircraft, stars or planets seen through moving cloud, or reflections distorted by haze and darkness. At sea, a witness often lacks fixed reference points, making distance and motion difficult to judge. A light that appears to follow a turning boat may actually be far away.

Water columns demand a different set of possibilities. Waterspouts, localised wind effects, breaking waves, underwater gas release, marine activity or human operations could produce unusual surface behaviour. However, the reports contain too little meteorological and positional information to select confidently among them. Claims of perfectly calm conditions also require contemporary weather observations rather than memory or later summaries.

Military activity has repeatedly been suggested because the Adriatic was strategically important during the Cold War. Missiles, naval exercises and aircraft could explain some lights and sounds. Yet a military explanation also needs evidence: exercise notices, unit records, radar tracks or declassified operational documents. In their absence, “secret tests” can become as unfalsifiable as extraterrestrial claims.

Instrument failures may have been ordinary faults, interference from nearby transmitters, power problems or operating limitations. To argue that an external object affected several boats, investigators would need synchronised records showing the same disturbance at the same time and place. The available public accounts do not provide that level of correlation.

What records would be needed to connect them

The central question is not whether each witness was honest, but whether the events can be shown to belong to one physical sequence. That would require records far more precise than the summaries now commonly circulated.

The most valuable missing material would include:

Did one mystery unite the reports?

The available evidence does not show that one object or phenomenon united the 1978 Adriatic reports. The CP 2018 red light is a reasonably specific unresolved observation, although a flare-like or other short-lived luminous source remains plausible. The fishermen’s lights may contain several genuine but independent sightings. The great water columns and widespread electromagnetic effects are much less secure because their details are inconsistent and their primary documentation is difficult to locate.

Within Marche’s UFO history, the story matters less as proof of a hidden underwater presence than as an example of how a regional flap forms. Ancona’s inclusion in the “triangle” connected Marche to a wider Adriatic narrative, while the experiences of fishing communities gave the story local authority and human immediacy. Later reporting has preserved but has not materially strengthened the case. It has supplied names, approximate distances and reconstructed quotations, yet it has also introduced larger measurements, additional malfunctions and stronger claims of objects emerging from beneath the sea. Until original logs, witness statements and technical records are recovered, the 1978 Adriatic mystery is best classified as a mixed and weakly connected cluster: historically significant, partly unresolved, but not demonstrated to have had a single extraordinary cause.
