Introduction

Pier Fortunato Zanfretta’s first reported encounter, near Marzano di Torriglia on the night of 6–7 December 1978, became the defining UFO incident in Liguria. The core event is less elaborate than the later abduction story: a security guard investigating suspicious lights radioed his control room in evident distress, contact was lost, and colleagues found him confused and frightened near the property he had been checking. He then said he had confronted enormous non-human beings and seen a brilliantly illuminated object depart.[RinoDiStefano.com]rinodistefano.comRino Di Stefano.com STORI A DELL’UOMO CHE INCONTRÒ GLI UFOImage: Il professor Marco Marchesan durante l'ipnosi a Zanfretta Nella tarda serata di mercoledì 6 dicembre 1978 la guardia giurata Pier…

Overview image for First Encounter

There is evidence that something unusual happened to Zanfretta that night, particularly the contemporary alarm, his colleagues’ response and the subsequent Carabinieri enquiry. There is no independent evidence that establishes alien contact. The physical traces were ambiguous, other witnesses mainly reported distant lights rather than creatures, and the most dramatic abduction details emerged later under hypnosis. The case is therefore important not because it proves an extraterrestrial visit, but because it shows how a genuinely disturbing unexplained episode can grow into a much stronger story than its original evidence supports.

The night patrol near Marzano

Zanfretta was a 26-year-old security guard employed by the Val Bisagno private security organisation. Late on Wednesday 6 December, he was patrolling the mountainous Torriglia area north-east of Genoa. At a country property known as Casa Nostra, in the hamlet of Marzano, he reportedly noticed several lights around the building. Accounts say that the entrance appeared open, leading him to suspect a burglary rather than anything extraordinary.[rinodistefano.com]rinodistefano.comRino Di Stefano.com STORI A DELL’UOMO CHE INCONTRÒ GLI UFOImage: Il professor Marco Marchesan durante l'ipnosi a Zanfretta Nella tarda serata di mercoledì 6 dicembre 1978 la guardia giurata Pier…

What happened next is reconstructed principally from Zanfretta’s statements and the recollections of his colleagues. After entering or moving around the grounds, he contacted the control room by radio. Carlo Toccalino, who was on duty at the security organisation, later recalled hearing him react with fear and insist that the figures he was seeing were not men. Communication then broke off. Two colleagues, usually identified as Walter Lauria and Raimondo Mascia, went to search for him and reportedly found him at about 1.15 am in a field or open area close to the villa.[rinodistefano.com]rinodistefano.comRino Di Stefano.com Incontro ravvicinatoImage: Copertina del secondo numero della rivista "Mistero" uscito il 7 Marzo 2013 Era una notte fredda e buia quella tra mercoledì 6 e g…

Zanfretta was described as confused, shivering, feverish or in shock. Accounts vary over whether he had been unconscious, whether he was standing or lying down when found, and exactly how long he had been out of radio contact. Such differences matter because the story has frequently been retold from later interviews rather than from a publicly accessible set of complete contemporary records. The consistent element is that his colleagues regarded his distress as serious and unusual enough to report it rather than dismissing it as a joke.[RinoDiStefano.com]rinodistefano.comRino Di Stefano.com STORI A DELL’UOMO CHE INCONTRÒ GLI UFOImage: Il professor Marco Marchesan durante l'ipnosi a Zanfretta Nella tarda serata di mercoledì 6 dicembre 1978 la guardia giurata Pier…

When questioned, Zanfretta described a huge being, approximately three metres tall, with an irregular or folded-looking grey body, pointed features and yellow triangular eyes. He also reported a large illuminated object, commonly described in later retellings as red or triangular, which departed in an intense burst of light. These details made the incident far more striking than an ordinary report of lights in the sky. They nevertheless remained the account of a single frightened observer in darkness, without a second witness beside him.[rinodistefano.com]rinodistefano.comRino Di Stefano.com STORI A DELL’UOMO CHE INCONTRÒ GLI UFOImage: Il professor Marco Marchesan durante l'ipnosi a Zanfretta Nella tarda serata di mercoledì 6 dicembre 1978 la guardia giurata Pier…

The location complicates visual interpretation. Marzano lies in steep, wooded country where slopes, ridgelines and scattered houses restrict sightlines. At night, an observer may have little reliable information about the distance, size or height of a light source. That does not explain Zanfretta’s description of a creature, but it limits what can safely be inferred from his reported observation of an object around the property.

What colleagues and police recorded

The strongest part of the case is not the claimed humanoid encounter itself, but the surrounding sequence: Zanfretta was working a documented patrol, he made an alarmed radio transmission, colleagues searched for him, and the incident was brought to the Carabinieri. Unlike many UFO stories reconstructed years later, the first encounter generated institutional paperwork while it was still recent.[RinoDiStefano.com]rinodistefano.comPer cui, quando cominciai ad occuparmi di quanto accadde quella notte a Marzano di Torriglia, non mi Image: Pier Fortunato Zanfretta in d…

Brigadier Antonio Nucchi of the Torriglia Carabinieri station questioned Zanfretta and pursued reports connected with the episode. Later accounts refer to an information report concerning unidentified flying objects and humanoids, sent to the Genoa judicial authorities in January 1979. The judicial file was ultimately closed for lack of evidence that a crime had occurred. That outcome should not be interpreted as an official judgement that aliens were present—or that Zanfretta had fabricated his account. It meant that investigators had no criminal case to prosecute.[Wikipedia]WikipediaPier Fortunato ZanfrettaPier Fortunato Zanfretta

The often-repeated claim that investigators collected 52 witness statements needs careful handling. Journalist Rino Di Stefano, who became the case’s most influential chronicler, says the enquiry involved 52 witnesses, including prominent local residents. However, he also explains that this total grew across the wider series of incidents attributed to Zanfretta, rather than necessarily representing 52 independent witnesses to the first encounter on 6 December.[RinoDiStefano.com]rinodistefano.comPer cui, quando cominciai ad occuparmi di quanto accadde quella notte a Marzano di Torriglia, non mi Image: Pier Fortunato Zanfretta in d…

Most of those witnesses did not report seeing Zanfretta with beings. They reportedly described bright lights or large luminous objects in the Torriglia and Propata area, sometimes around the dates of his alleged experiences. These accounts may show that other people noticed unusual lights in the region, but they do not demonstrate that they saw the same object. Without precise times, positions, directions and original statements, separate light reports cannot be reliably triangulated into one event.[rinodistefano.com]rinodistefano.comPer cui, quando cominciai ad occuparmi di quanto accadde quella notte a Marzano di Torriglia, non mi Image: Pier Fortunato Zanfretta in d…

This distinction is central to evaluating the case. The radio exchange and rescue support the proposition that Zanfretta was frightened during his patrol. Reports of lights support only the weaker proposition that other observers saw something luminous in the surrounding area. Neither independently confirms the three-metre being he described.

Physical traces that proved little

Investigators reportedly noted a flattened or compressed area of grass close to Casa Nostra. Descriptions vary between a semicircle, a horseshoe-shaped mark and a roughly oval impression measuring several metres. Supportive accounts have presented it as a possible landing trace left by a heavy craft.[inesergo.it]inesergo.itInes Ergo Il caso ZanfrettaTutto ha inizio nell’entroterra di Genova (Marzano, vicino a Torriglia) la notte tra il 6 e il 7 dicembre 1978…. Sembrerebbe il plot d…

A trace on the ground is potentially important only when its origin, age and physical characteristics are properly documented. In this instance, publicly available retellings do not provide a full forensic survey, soil analysis, measured load pattern or evidence of unusual chemical, thermal or radioactive effects. There is also a reported mundane explanation: the marked area was associated with a place where the property owners tied a horse, which could account for flattened grass.[Wikipedia]WikipediaZanfretta UFO IncidentZanfretta UFO Incident

The competing descriptions illustrate the problem. A believer can reasonably say that police recorded a mark near the reported encounter site. A sceptic can equally point out that flattened vegetation is common, perishable and incapable of identifying what caused it. Without contemporaneous photographs tied to measurements, uncontaminated samples or a demonstrably anomalous effect, the mark is contextual evidence rather than proof of a landing.

The temperature and condition of Zanfretta’s clothing have also become part of the legend. Some later accounts state that he was unusually warm, or that his clothes were warm and dry despite cold or wet conditions. Others describe him as feverish. These observations were apparently impressions made by colleagues, not instrument readings collected under controlled conditions. A warm body, heated vehicle, protective clothing or inaccurate recollection could all affect such judgements.[fandom.com]cryptidz.fandom.comCryptidz Zanfretta's AliensCryptidz Zanfretta's Aliens

Even if the clothing report is accepted, it does not point uniquely to an extraordinary cause. The same applies to Zanfretta’s shock. His condition supports the sincerity or intensity of his fear, but sincere distress does not establish that his interpretation of its cause was correct.

The first report and the later abduction story

The first encounter should be separated from the elaborate narrative that followed it. On the night itself and in the immediate questioning, the central claims concerned unusual lights, a frightening figure or figures and a departing illuminated object. The account that Zanfretta had been taken aboard a craft and subjected to examinations emerged through later hypnosis sessions arranged after journalists and investigators became involved.[RinoDiStefano.com]rinodistefano.comPer cui, quando cominciai ad occuparmi di quanto accadde quella notte a Marzano di Torriglia, non mi Image: Pier Fortunato Zanfretta in d…

This chronology matters because hypnosis is not a dependable method of recovering a literal recording of an event. Research on eyewitness memory finds that hypnosis may increase the amount of information reported while also increasing errors, suggestibility and confidence in inaccurate recollections. The American Psychological Association has similarly discussed how hypnotic suggestion can produce distorted or false memories.[nih.gov]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govOpen source on nih.gov.

The risk is especially relevant when a witness is repeatedly questioned about an already publicised extraordinary event. Questions, expectations and information supplied by interviewers can become woven into a sincere memory. A person may emerge more certain without becoming more accurate. Modern evidence on eyewitness recollection also rejects the popular idea that memory functions like a hidden video recording that can simply be replayed under the right conditions.[National Academies]nationalacademies.orgOpen source on nationalacademies.org.

Even some writers sympathetic to the importance of the Zanfretta case have acknowledged problems with the hypnosis. Italian UFO researchers Roberto Pinotti and Enrico Baccarini were reported to have considered at least one session irreparably contaminated by an investigator’s intervention. There have also been claims that Zanfretta’s early drawings differed from later depictions produced after hypnosis, although the original materials are not readily available for independent comparison.[Wikipedia]WikipediaPier Fortunato ZanfrettaPier Fortunato Zanfretta

Hypnosis therefore did not strengthen the evidence from the first night. It expanded the narrative while making it harder to separate Zanfretta’s original perceptions from later reconstruction. The alien-abduction component should consequently be treated as a subsequent claim, not as independently established evidence from 6 December.

Evidence, gaps and plausible uncertainty

The first Torriglia encounter is not an empty story. Several elements appear to have existed before the case became a national sensation:

  • Zanfretta was on duty in the Marzano area.
  • He made a distressed radio communication.
  • Colleagues went to find him and regarded his condition as abnormal.
  • The Carabinieri opened an enquiry and recorded local reports.
  • A patch of disturbed vegetation was observed near the property.

Together, these points make the incident more substantial than an unsupported anecdote told for the first time years later.[RinoDiStefano.com]rinodistefano.comPer cui, quando cominciai ad occuparmi di quanto accadde quella notte a Marzano di Torriglia, non mi Image: Pier Fortunato Zanfretta in d…

However, none of these elements verifies the central extraordinary claim. No colleague witnessed the beings. The other local witnesses mainly reported lights, not an encounter at Casa Nostra. The ground trace had no demonstrated exotic properties. There was no authenticated photograph, radar record, recovered material, medical finding or instrument measurement linking Zanfretta’s distress to a craft. The detailed onboard experience emerged through a memory-recovery method now regarded as unreliable.

Possible ordinary explanations remain incomplete rather than conclusive. Zanfretta could have misperceived people, animals, vegetation or lights while already tense about a suspected break-in. He could have suffered a panic reaction, temporary disorientation or another brief episode that altered his perception. Parts of the report may also have changed through retelling without deliberate deception. None of those suggestions can now be demonstrated from the surviving public record.

The fairest classification is therefore unresolved as a personal experience but weak as evidence of alien contact. Something caused a working security guard to become acutely distressed in the hills above Genoa, and the response of his colleagues and the Carabinieri gave the episode a genuine documentary foundation. What that foundation establishes is an unusual incident—not the extraterrestrial explanation that later made Zanfretta famous.

Liguria’s landmark case, but not a confirmed encounter

Zanfretta’s first encounter matters within Ligurian UFO history because it joined an immediate human drama to police involvement and reports of lights from the surrounding countryside. That combination gave the story durability and helped turn Torriglia into the region’s best-known UFO location. It also set the pattern for the later Zanfretta case: an initially confusing event became surrounded by additional sightings, repeated encounters, hypnosis and media attention.[RinoDiStefano.com]rinodistefano.comPer cui, quando cominciai ad occuparmi di quanto accadde quella notte a Marzano di Torriglia, non mi Image: Pier Fortunato Zanfretta in d…

Later reporting preserved useful names, dates and recollections, but it did not produce decisive new evidence from the first night. Instead, the story’s most memorable elements increasingly depended on Zanfretta’s testimony and hypnotically developed memories. The passage of time has made it harder, not easier, to distinguish contemporaneous evidence from later narrative layers.

The lasting lesson of the Torriglia incident is therefore one of evidential proportion. Zanfretta’s fear may have been entirely genuine. The police interest was real, and unexplained lights may have been seen in the wider area. Those facts justify continued historical interest. They do not justify treating the beings, spacecraft or abduction as confirmed events.
