What Can the Adriatic Radar Claims Prove?
Radar returns sound persuasive, but without instrument details, positions and operator records they cannot securely confirm an unknown craft.

Introduction
The radar element of the 1978 Adriatic mystery sounds stronger than the surviving evidence allows. Later accounts describe unknown targets, elongated marks, radar interference and even complete equipment failure aboard fishing boats and a coastguard patrol vessel. Yet no original radar plot, instrument log, maintenance report, operator transcript or independently timed shore-radar record has emerged publicly. That distinction matters. Radar can provide persuasive evidence when it records a stable, measurable track that agrees with visual or other sensors. A recollection that a screen showed a “large mark”, went blank or failed to display a light is far less decisive. The Adriatic reports remain historically interesting, particularly within the UFO record of Marche and the adjoining Abruzzo coast, but the radar claims do not securely demonstrate an unknown craft.
The reported radar contacts
The stories arose during the autumn 1978 wave of unusual reports along the central Adriatic, in waters stretching from the Ancona area southwards past San Benedetto del Tronto towards Pescara. Fishermen described red or white lights, disturbed water, columns of spray and interference with radios, compasses and onboard radar. Three different kinds of radar claim tend to be blended together in modern summaries.
A visual object with no radar return. On 9 November, five crew members aboard the Pescara coastguard patrol boat CP 2018 reportedly observed a bright red light, described in some accounts as resembling a flare, while operating roughly four miles off Silvi. One version says it rose rapidly from the sea and disappeared within about four seconds. Later reports state that the vessel’s radar showed no corresponding target. Interference or a radar blackout. Some later narratives add that the CP 2018 radar suffered severe interference or stopped functioning near the sighting location. Other summaries speak more generally of disruption affecting fishing-boat radar, radio communication and compasses. The problem is that the available public accounts do not provide the equipment model, operating range, display settings, duration of the failure, maintenance history or a technician’s diagnosis. An unidentified mark on a fishing boat’s screen. A retrospective account says the crew of the fishing vessel Andrea Padre saw a large elongated mark that disappeared when the boat was little more than 600 metres from San Benedetto del Tronto harbour. This is closer to a positive radar claim, but it survives as testimony rather than as preserved instrument data. These claims are not necessarily false. They are simply different in evidential value. A missing radar return cannot establish that an observed light was a solid object. Equipment interference establishes a technical problem only after ordinary faults and environmental effects have been excluded. A single unexplained screen mark may represent a target, clutter, interference or a display artefact.
False echoes and coastal interference
Marine radar is not a camera that produces an unambiguous picture of everything nearby. It transmits radio pulses and displays returned energy. What appears on the screen depends on the target’s size, material and angle, but also on antenna height, sea conditions, weather, propagation, gain settings and clutter controls.
The International Maritime Organization’s radar-training standards, adopted only a few years after the Adriatic events, identify precisely the factors that complicate interpretation: sea clutter, rain clutter, propagation conditions, shadow sectors, receiver settings, false echoes and interference from other radar sets. Close to the central Adriatic coast, several mechanisms could therefore produce ambiguous or disappearing marks:
- Sea clutter is the mass of short-lived returns caused by waves around a vessel. Its appearance changes with wind, swell, heading and the anti-sea-clutter setting. A stronger patch can resemble a poorly defined object, while aggressive filtering can erase genuine small targets.
- Rain or atmospheric clutter can create broad areas or broken patches rather than a neat ship-like echo. Changes in the weather or receiver controls can make these appear, weaken or disappear.
- Side-lobe and multiple echoes can place false targets at misleading bearings or ranges, particularly around strong reflectors such as large vessels, harbour structures or coastline features.
- Radar-to-radar interference can create arcs, spokes, dots or other screen patterns when nearby sets operate on related frequencies. The IMO specifically treats this as a known interpretation problem.[IMO]wwwcdn.imo.orgOpen source on imo.org.
- Shadowing and weak reflectivity can explain a visual light without a radar contact. A flare, meteor, distant aircraft light or small object may be bright to the eye while returning little or no energy to a marine radar configured chiefly for navigation.
A radar blackout requires a different explanation from a false echo. Power interruption, a loose connection, transmitter failure, salt or moisture intrusion, overheating or maladjustment can all disrupt marine electronics. Electromagnetic interference is possible in principle, but claiming that an unknown object caused it requires more than coincidence. Investigators would need to show what failed, how it failed and whether the same fault could be reproduced or identified during inspection.
There is also an important inconsistency in the retellings. The CP 2018 story has variously become a red flare-like light absent from radar, a light emerging from the sea, and a dramatic radar blackout. What meaningful radar evidence would require
Radar evidence becomes genuinely powerful when it supports measurement rather than atmosphere. A scientifically useful Adriatic record would need to answer several basic questions.
First, the instrument must be identifiable: radar make, wavelength, antenna position, range scale, pulse setting, gain and clutter suppression. Without those details, investigators cannot estimate what the equipment should have detected or recognise characteristic artefacts.
Second, the return must have a recorded position over time. A sequence of bearings and ranges would allow calculation of course and speed. It could then be compared with the movement reported by witnesses, nearby shipping, aircraft routes and the coastline. One indistinct mark remembered years later offers no such test.
Third, there should be independent corroboration. A target detected simultaneously by two separated radars would be much harder to dismiss as local clutter or equipment failure. Agreement between radar, visual observation, photography, radio traffic and environmental data would be stronger still. Fourth, investigators would need the negative information as well as the striking part: nearby vessels that detected nothing, shore stations that remained operational, weather observations, maintenance checks and the behaviour of known ships in the area. None of that supporting dataset is publicly available for the Adriatic claims. The surviving material is dominated by retrospective summaries and witness-based narratives. Did later reporting strengthen the case?
Later coverage preserved witness names, vessel names and the date of the CP 2018 patrol, which is useful historically. It also helped establish that the 1978 reports were not merely a recent internet invention. On the narrower radar question, however, later reporting has mostly repeated or enlarged the original story rather than adding testable evidence. Articles written decades afterwards describe “unknown objects” on screens and powerful electromagnetic disturbances, yet rarely provide contemporary logs or quote a technical investigation. Some accounts say the coastguard radar detected nothing; others foreground its alleged blackout. The fairest assessment is that the radar claims neither prove an extraordinary vehicle nor fully explain away the witnesses’ experiences. They show that radar and electrical disturbances became part of the 1978 coastal narrative. They may also preserve memories of genuine equipment anomalies and confusing screen returns. But in evidential terms, they remain unverified reports about radar rather than recoverable radar evidence.
For Marche’s UFO history, that is the central lesson of the Adriatic mystery. The word “radar” gave the story an appearance of objective confirmation, especially when attached to fishermen and a coastguard vessel. Once the claims are separated into non-detection, interference and an anecdotal screen mark, their limits become clearer. The case remains unresolved at the level of individual observations, but the surviving radar material is too incomplete to establish the presence, movement or physical nature of an unknown craft.
