Introduction
Calabria’s earliest “UFO” reports are not records of flying saucers seen before their time. They are older stories that were gathered decades later and retrospectively placed in modern sighting catalogues. The best-known example, attributed to Varapodio around the winter of 1900, describes a brilliant “star with a tail” apparently descending towards a frightened traveller. A second entry names Feroleto Antico in 1915 but preserves little publicly accessible detail. These reports matter because they show how unusual experiences were described before “flying saucer” became a familiar cultural label. They may preserve memories of meteors, astronomical objects, aircraft, wartime activity or genuinely unidentified lights. Yet none of the early Calabrian cases currently offers the contemporary documentation, precise measurements or independent testimony needed to establish an extraordinary craft. Their strongest value is historical: they reveal how memories are collected, classified and reshaped by later ideas.
The oldest reports preserved in later catalogues
The Centro Ufologico Nazionale, or CUN, defines its “pre-UFO” period as 1900 to 1946: the years before pilot Kenneth Arnold’s widely publicised sighting of 24 June 1947 helped popularise the expression “flying saucer”. The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum describes 1947 as the year in which Arnold’s report prompted subsequent witnesses and newspapers to adopt this new language. A CUN chronological table records five Calabrian entries before Arnold’s sighting:

The table demonstrates that these claims have catalogue numbers and classifications, but it should not be mistaken for a collection of five complete investigations. In its publicly readable form, it supplies dates, places and coded categories rather than full witness statements, original documents or detailed explanatory analyses. A row in a database confirms that a report was collected; it does not independently confirm that the reported event occurred as remembered.
That distinction becomes even more important when comparing the CUN table with the much larger Calabrian catalogue assembled by the Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici, or CISU. The 2023 edition contains 1,164 regional reports, each reportedly accompanied by documentary references and assessments of reliability and strangeness. Varapodio and the “star with a tail”
Varapodio is the only early Calabrian case for which a substantial narrative has circulated widely. According to a story publicised by CUN in 2015, a man walking home on a dark winter evening around the beginning of the twentieth century saw an exceptionally bright “star” that illuminated the surrounding area. A tail then appeared, and the phenomenon seemed to descend towards him, with the tail apparently extending to the ground. The vividness of the account can make it sound like a close encounter. Its chain of transmission, however, is a serious weakness. The published version came from a woman recounting what her great-grandfather was said to have experienced. The original witness was not interviewed by the investigators who later catalogued the episode, and no contemporary newspaper report, diary, police note or astronomical observation has been publicly linked to it. The language also belongs more naturally to an older vocabulary of sky phenomena than to modern aircraft reporting. A “star with a tail” was a familiar way to describe a comet or comet-like object, while sudden brilliance, apparent descent and landscape illumination can also feature in descriptions of bright meteors. Perceived motion towards an observer is especially difficult to judge at night when distance and scale are unknown. The story does not provide duration, direction, angular size, weather, sound or the position of known celestial objects, so no particular conventional explanation can now be demonstrated.
It is equally possible that details intensified in family retelling. A bright object becomes one that lit the whole district; an apparent trail becomes a tail touching the ground; fear becomes the central dramatic element. This does not require dishonesty. Oral memories commonly preserve the emotional shape of an event while losing dates, measurements and mundane context. Varapodio may therefore represent a real frightening observation whose physical cause is unrecoverable, rather than an invented story or evidence of an unknown machine.
The case has sometimes been promoted as the first item in Italy’s twentieth-century UFO record. That is a catalogue distinction, not a finding that Italy’s first alien craft appeared over Calabria. CUN’s accompanying publicity also incorrectly stated that the Wright brothers’ first flight occurred in 1913. The Smithsonian dates the first successful powered, controlled flights to 17 December 1903. Feroleto Antico and the limits of a catalogue row
The Feroleto Antico entry is dated simply to an evening in 1915. In CUN’s table it receives an astronomical classification, suggesting that the cataloguer considered the observation related in form or possible identity to an astronomical phenomenon. That lack of detail prevents meaningful reconstruction. The year 1915 raises several ordinary possibilities—stars or planets seen under unusual conditions, a meteor, a searchlight, an early aircraft or a wartime report—but the catalogue row supplies no evidence with which to choose among them. Italy entered the First World War in May 1915, but it would be speculative to connect the Feroleto Antico observation to military activity without a date, flight record or contemporary report.
The classification itself is therefore more informative than the alleged event. It shows that the compiler did not necessarily treat every early report as a structured craft. Modern readers may see the place name and year in a UFO list and imagine a disc or metallic vehicle, although the surviving category points instead towards an unusual celestial observation. Feroleto Antico is a clear example of how modern catalogue presentation can create more apparent specificity than the source material actually contains.
The same caution applies to the pre-war entries from Catanzaro and Reggio Calabria. Catanzaro’s June 1930 case is marked as a low-altitude observation, while the Reggio Calabria entry of April 1933 is assigned another coded category, but neither is accompanied in the public table by sufficient narrative evidence to judge distance, shape or likely cause. How descriptions changed before modern UFO language
Before 1947, people did not possess the standard repertoire that later shaped UFO testimony: saucers, domes, portholes, cigar-shaped mother ships, silent hovering discs and extraordinary acceleration. Unusual things in the sky were more likely to be compared with stars, fire, lamps, clouds, celestial signs, balloons or known aircraft. Varapodio’s “star with a tail” fits this earlier descriptive world.
After Arnold’s 1947 report, newspaper coverage rapidly supplied a new and memorable interpretive model. The phrase “flying saucer” did more than name a mystery; it offered witnesses a ready-made shape and technological frame. Reports that might once have been described as fiery stars or strange lights could now be narrated as machines. Retrospective cases are particularly vulnerable to this shift. A relative telling an old story after decades of films, newspaper reports and UFO discussions may translate an ancestor’s experience into concepts unavailable when it occurred. Conversely, an investigator may retain the older language but insert the account into a system designed around later UFO categories. The resulting record contains two historical layers: the supposed original observation and the much later act of classification.
This is why “pre-UFO” is a more careful term than “early flying-saucer sighting”. It acknowledges that unexplained aerial stories existed before 1947 without assuming that they formed the same phenomenon understood in the same way. Why missing contemporary records limit confidence
The central problem is not that the early Calabrian witnesses were necessarily unreliable. It is that the information needed to test their observations has largely disappeared. A useful historical investigation would ordinarily seek an exact date and time, the original witness’s words, independent observers, weather records, astronomical conditions, newspaper coverage, aircraft movements and evidence that the account was recorded before modern UFO publicity.
For Varapodio, the published chain is a family memory related by a descendant. For Feroleto Antico, the accessible record is little more than a dated catalogue line. The other early entries similarly lack enough public detail for an evidence-based identification. Under those conditions, “unresolved” means that the cause cannot now be established. It does not mean that ordinary explanations were excluded.
Several warning signs recur across the group:
- Approximate dates: “around 1900”, “in winter” or only a year.
- Missing observation data: no dependable duration, bearing, elevation or angular size.
- Retrospective testimony: accounts collected long after the alleged event.
- Single-source dependence: no clearly identified independent witnesses or parallel records.
- Later terminology: cases interpreted through classifications developed after the flying-saucer era began.
- Catalogue compression: a code and location may conceal how fragmentary the original source was.
Large archives are still useful when these limitations are made visible. CISU describes its regional catalogues as collections that provide documentary references and separate assessments of reliability and strangeness. What the early cases contribute to Calabria’s UFO history
The pre-1947 Calabrian reports do not establish an early regional wave. The known entries are scattered across more than four decades, geographically dispersed and too poorly documented to reveal a reliable pattern. There is no demonstrated concentration around an airport, military installation, radar site or recurring flight path, and no surviving set of simultaneous observations linking the cases.
Their importance lies instead in showing how Calabria’s later UFO record was built. Researchers did not limit themselves to reports made after UFO organisations existed. They searched family testimony, local memories and historical material for older unusual-sky narratives, then incorporated them into regional and national catalogues. That work preserved stories that might otherwise have vanished, but it also moved them into a framework capable of making them appear more technically defined than they originally were.
Varapodio is therefore best regarded as a memorable oral account of an unidentified luminous phenomenon. Feroleto Antico is a thin catalogue entry whose astronomical coding may point towards a conventional celestial event. Catanzaro, Reggio Calabria and Terravecchia extend the chronology but currently add little verifiable detail. Collectively, the cases are historically interesting, evidentially weak and open to several ordinary explanations.
That assessment neither proves nor dismisses what individual witnesses experienced. It recognises a more basic limit: without contemporary records, later investigators cannot reliably separate an unusual natural event, a mistaken perception, an embellished memory and a genuinely unexplained observation. Calabria’s earliest sighting stories belong to the history of aerial mystery, but the surviving evidence does not justify turning them into confirmed encounters with structured craft.
