The best-documented recent airport claim, publicised in July 2023, was not supported by radar data, aircrew testimony or an airport safety response. Instead, it became a dispute over a short video: one UFO organisation described a high-speed disc-like object, while another analysis concluded that the image showed a nearby gull blurred by motion and compression. The episode matters within Liguria’s UFO history because it demonstrates how the airport setting itself can make ordinary aircraft, birds and lights look extraordinary.

Why the coastal airport attracts reports

Cristoforo Colombo Airport is built on reclaimed land immediately offshore at Sestri Ponente. Its single runway, numbered 10/28, runs broadly east–west, so arriving and departing aircraft may be viewed from the city, harbour roads, nearby hills and the western suburbs against very different backgrounds. This is an unusually productive setting for misperception. A dark sea provides few fixed objects against which to judge height or distance. Haze can conceal an aircraft’s fuselage while leaving its strongest lights visible. Hills behind the city create broken horizons, and the observer may be moving along a road or railway, adding apparent motion through parallax. The airport also creates a steady concentration of lights with specialised patterns. Aircraft carry bright forward-facing landing lights, flashing anti-collision beacons and red, green and white position lights. Runways and taxiways add white, green, red and blue lighting, while obstruction lights mark structures around the airport. That does not mean every report made near the airport is automatically explained. It means that “near Genoa Airport” is not evidence of unusual technology by itself. It is a warning that aircraft movement, airport lighting, birds, sea conditions and viewing geometry must be checked before an unidentified light is treated as genuinely anomalous.

Why an approaching aircraft can look stationary

One of the most common airport-related UFO descriptions is a powerful white or yellow light that appears to hover for several minutes, becomes brighter and then suddenly moves sideways or vanishes. An aircraft approaching almost directly towards the observer can create precisely that sequence.

During a nearly head-on approach, most of the aircraft’s movement is along the observer’s line of sight rather than across the visible sky. Its angular position therefore changes very little, even though it may be covering several kilometres each minute. The landing lights dominate the view because they point forward. The wings, coloured navigation lights and body may remain invisible until the aircraft comes closer or turns towards the runway.

When it turns onto another heading, the apparent behaviour changes abruptly. The “stationary” light may split into several lights, slide sideways, dim sharply or disappear as the landing beams cease to point at the observer. None of these changes requires sudden acceleration. They reflect a changing viewing angle.

The effect is stronger around Genoa because an aircraft approaching over the sea may have no visible landscape beneath it. The FAA describes a related night illusion known as autokinesis: when a person stares at an isolated light against darkness, the light may appear to drift even though it is stationary. Atmospheric conditions can further complicate the picture. Landing lights reflected through haze or thin cloud may appear enlarged, diffuse or surrounded by a luminous halo. As the aircraft changes altitude or passes through different layers of moisture, the brightness can pulse without the source itself switching on and off. A viewer may consequently describe a glowing sphere rather than an aeroplane.

A useful clue is repetition. A light that appears in roughly the same part of the sky on several evenings, remains almost fixed, then moves laterally and descends towards Sestri Ponente is more likely to mark an established arrival path than an unknown craft. Checking the time against recorded flight movements is much more informative than enlarging a blurred frame.

The most prominent recent “Genoa Airport UFO” story arose from footage circulated in July 2023. The object appeared as a small pale form moving rapidly through a view near the airport. The Mediterranean UFO Centre argued that its speed, apparent trail, translucency and disc-like shape supported classifying it as a genuine unidentified flying object. The depth cue was central to the disagreement. An object crossing in front of a known foreground structure cannot simultaneously be a large craft travelling above the runway unless the spatial interpretation is wrong. The sceptical analysis estimated a size of no more than roughly 40 centimetres and argued that the blurred “trail” was not a physical exhaust or wake but an imaging effect. This explanation is not equivalent to a laboratory identification of the species. The original object was not recovered, and a short compressed recording cannot establish every detail. “Probably a gull or another nearby bird” is therefore more defensible than claiming absolute certainty. Nevertheless, the foreground relationship, estimated size and lack of independent aviation evidence substantially weaken the interpretation of a large object overflying the airport.

The claim that airport radar would necessarily have detected any object should also be used carefully. Primary radar performance depends on size, range, altitude, reflectivity and coverage, while small birds and objects very close to the ground are not equivalent to conventional aircraft targets. More important is the absence of evidence expected from a hazardous runway intrusion: no documented closure, air-traffic alert, pilot report or official investigation has emerged in the public accounts. The dispute also illustrates a recurring weakness in UFO reporting. The most dramatic description — a fast disc crossing airport airspace — was inferred from appearance before distance had been established. Once the object is placed close to the camera, its apparent speed and size cease to be extraordinary.

How video compression distorts scale and shape

Mobile-phone footage often looks more decisive than it is. A camera records angular size in pixels, not an object’s real dimensions. A four-pixel mark might represent a nearby insect, a gull tens of metres away, an aircraft several kilometres away or a much larger object at still greater distance. Without a reliable range measurement, physical size and speed cannot be calculated.

Digital zoom does not restore missing detail. It enlarges existing pixels and the processing applied to them. A bright or rapidly moving point may become a flattened oval, ring or disc as the camera sharpens edges, suppresses noise and combines information across frames. Autofocus changes can make the same object expand and contract, while exposure controls can erase a dark fuselage and preserve only the luminous centre.

Lossy video compression introduces another layer of distortion. To reduce file size, the encoder discards information and predicts parts of one frame from surrounding frames. Small, fast objects crossing a relatively static background are especially vulnerable to smearing, block-like edges and ghost trails. A halo that seems attached to an object may therefore be a residue of processing rather than a physical wake.

This is not merely a theoretical objection raised against UFO footage. The US All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office has published an aviation-related case in which an apparent trail behind an object was assessed as a compression artefact; after examining longer-focal-length footage and commercial flight data, investigators concluded that the object was probably an airliner. The Genoa gull dispute fits this technical pattern. The reported translucency and trail were treated by one side as properties of an unusual craft, but by the sceptical analysis as consequences of motion blur and video processing. Because the original footage did not provide range, calibrated optics or independent tracking, the more dramatic interpretation could not be tested quantitatively.

What would make an airport case persuasive?

A genuinely strong Genoa Airport case would require evidence that separates an unusual object from the dense background of ordinary aviation. A witness statement or short video can establish that something was noticed, but not necessarily what it was.

The most useful material would include:

  • an exact date, time, filming position and camera direction;
  • the original, unedited file with metadata rather than a social-media copy;
  • visible landmarks that allow the line of sight to be reconstructed;
  • continuous footage before and after the most striking moment;
  • simultaneous views from separated locations, allowing triangulation;
  • matching or conflicting flight-tracking and air-traffic information;
  • independent reports from pilots, controllers or airport personnel;
  • weather records, including cloud height, visibility and wind;
  • evidence of movement that cannot be reproduced by perspective, camera shake or a nearby bird.

Modern scientific proposals for studying unidentified aerial phenomena emphasise precisely this combination: wide-field tracking, narrow-field imaging, triangulation, radar-derived range, environmental sensors and independent corroboration. Without distance, even apparent speed is unreliable. Without the camera’s motion, apparent acceleration is unreliable. Without the flight path, a hovering light cannot be separated confidently from a head-on aircraft. These are not minor technical reservations; they determine whether the central claim can be tested at all.

Are Genoa Airport UFOs usually aircraft?

Many luminous reports near the airport are likely to be aircraft, particularly when they involve bright stationary lights, repeated paths, gradual brightening and sudden lateral movement. Others may involve runway lighting, coastal birds, balloons, drones or planets seen through haze. The July 2023 case is better explained as a nearby bird and imaging artefact than as a large craft crossing controlled airspace, although the limited footage prevents absolute identification.

That conclusion does not prove that every Genoa airport sighting has been solved. Publicly available records are fragmented, and most reports never acquire the timing, original imagery or independent sensor data needed for a firm verdict. Some should therefore remain simply “insufficiently documented” rather than being labelled either extraterrestrial or definitively debunked.

Within Liguria’s broader UFO history, airport cases are valuable chiefly as demonstrations of mechanism. They show how a real light, aircraft or bird can generate an honest but mistaken report when viewed over dark water, through coastal haze or through a compressed digital image. Compared with the region’s more elaborate witness narratives, Genoa Airport sightings are usually less mysterious once approach geometry, foreground objects and camera behaviour are examined first.
