Eugenio Siragusa was not simply a witness who reported an unusual light over Sicily. He claimed continuing communication, face-to-face meetings and journeys with extraterrestrial beings, then built a public mission around the messages he said they had entrusted to him. The rise of a Catania contactee
Siragusa was born in Catania in 1919 and initially entered Sicily’s small flying-saucer scene as an enthusiast rather than as its leading visionary. In 1958 he was among the founders of an early local study group alongside Sicilian researchers including Franco Brancatelli, Alfredo Scalia, Giuseppe Pappalardo and Aldo Turiano. He said that he had previously experienced unusual inner communications, but that in April of that year he was drawn towards Mount Etna and met beings associated with a luminous craft. The Catania newspaper La Sicilia brought the story to a much wider audience on 19 September 1962, reproducing Siragusa’s narrative and early messages. Its headline framing was openly sceptical, effectively suggesting that imagination had been allowed to run freely. The mockery did not prevent the article from giving Siragusa the publicity he needed. That sequence is important. Siragusa did not become prominent because investigators first established an exceptional physical case. He became prominent because a vivid personal narrative entered the regional press, attracted curiosity and developed into a continuing body of teachings. The movement grew through repetition, personal charisma and the promise of privileged knowledge, not through the accumulation of independently confirmed observations.
Messages, followers and media attention
Siragusa founded the Centro Studi Fratellanza Cosmica, or Centre for the Study of Cosmic Brotherhood, which became the organisational centre of his mission. The movement’s title captured its central promise. Siragusa did not portray the occupants of UFOs primarily as hostile invaders or detached scientific observers. They were presented as members of an advanced cosmic order concerned about humanity’s violence, materialism, environmental destruction and misuse of nuclear technology. Earth, in this account, occupied a morally dangerous stage of development and faced catastrophe unless human beings changed their behaviour.
This framework combined several traditions that were already familiar to European audiences:
- Flying-saucer contact stories, including encounters with attractive, human-like visitors and voyages aboard advanced craft.
- Christian and apocalyptic language, with extraterrestrials sometimes portrayed as agents of divine justice or beings connected to biblical history.
- Esoteric teachings, including reincarnation, hidden dimensions, lost civilisations and claims about humanity’s cosmic origins.
- Contemporary anxieties, particularly nuclear war, pollution, political conflict and the possibility of planetary disaster.
The result was closer to a spiritual movement than to a conventional UFO investigation society. Siragusa claimed not only meetings with non-human visitors but access to cosmology, prophecy and moral instruction. Accounts circulated by supporters also attributed to him extraordinary journeys, including travel beyond Earth and knowledge about hidden extraterrestrial bases. The movement was not wholly uniform. Local branches and individual followers sometimes developed interests that went beyond Siragusa’s original presentation. A Bologna branch active in the 1970s later separated from him and evolved towards a more elaborate mixture of occult, neo-pagan and magical ideas. Why his story changed Sicily’s UFO culture
Siragusa’s most lasting influence was to make a particular interpretation of UFOs culturally available. Before a witness had finished describing a light, a disc or an apparent figure, audiences already possessed a story into which it could be placed: visitors were watching humanity, Etna was a possible contact zone, advanced beings could look human, and their appearance carried a moral warning.
That did not mean later Sicilian witnesses were copying Siragusa consciously. Nor does similarity prove that every report was imaginary. It does mean that testimony developed within an environment already rich in familiar imagery. Investigators therefore have to consider cultural influence alongside astronomical, meteorological and aviation explanations.
Mount Etna was especially powerful as a setting. Its height, isolation, changing weather, volcanic activity and dramatic night skies made it a natural stage for stories of luminous objects and secret meetings. Siragusa’s alleged encounters tied that landscape to a mythology of cosmic visitation. When later close-encounter reports appeared around Etna, readers and journalists encountered them in a region where the volcano had already been represented as a meeting place between humanity and beings from elsewhere.
The influence became particularly relevant during Italy’s enormous UFO wave of 1978. Sicilian researchers catalogued 223 regional reports that year, including lights, photographs and alleged encounters with humanoid figures. The 1978 crisis and its aftermath
Siragusa’s public standing was severely tested at the end of the 1970s. He dissolved the Centro Studi Fratellanza Cosmica in 1978, according to both movement histories and later regional accounts. In November that year he was arrested after allegations by an American couple formerly associated with his circle. Regional UFO historians have remained strongly critical of his leadership and of the way followers’ commitment supported his activities, while devotees reject that portrayal and describe participation as voluntary, unpaid spiritual work. After the dissolution of the original centre, Siragusa’s influence continued through successor organisations, archives and individual disciples. One of the most visible was Giorgio Bongiovanni, who combined extraterrestrial messages with Marian devotion and claims of receiving the stigmata at Fatima in 1989. The disagreement matters because it shows that “Sicily’s contactee movement” was never a single stable institution. It became a family of related narratives, each claiming continuity with a special revelation while disputing who had the right to interpret or publish it. Siragusa remained the founding reference point, but control of his legacy fragmented.
Contactee testimony is not sighting evidence
The central evidential problem is straightforward. Siragusa’s extraordinary claims depended overwhelmingly on Siragusa himself. His alleged meetings were not documented under controlled conditions, his messages were not received through independently monitored instruments, and the journeys described in movement literature produced no publicly verified object or measurement demonstrating extraterrestrial origin.
This makes his case fundamentally different from a well-recorded aerial incident. A conventional sighting investigation can compare witness positions, timings, photographs, radar data, weather records, aircraft movements and astronomical objects. Even when no explanation is found, the inquiry concerns an event that may have left several independent traces.
A contactee narrative is harder to test because its most important elements occur privately:
- The claimant says a voice or telepathic message was received.
- The claimant identifies its source as extraterrestrial.
- The claimant supplies information about the visitors’ intentions.
- Followers may accept later events as confirmation of earlier warnings.
- Failed or unclear predictions can be reinterpreted symbolically or postponed.
The existence of documents does not solve that problem. Siragusa’s archives contain many messages, statements and recollections, but these establish what he and his followers published, not who or what originated the material. Some of Siragusa’s teachings also included claims that conflict with established science, including hidden lunar bases, vanished moons, a hollow Earth and cosmic accounts of lost continents. Supporters often point instead to moral consistency, apparent predictions, personal experiences around Siragusa or the emotional force of his teaching. These may explain sincere belief, but they do not identify an extraterrestrial source. Broad warnings about war, environmental decline, water scarcity or technological danger can remain relevant for decades without demonstrating privileged information; they concern risks already discussed by scientists, governments and campaigners.
How Siragusa should be assessed
Siragusa’s place in Sicilian history is best understood by separating three questions that are often merged.
Did he become an influential public figure? Yes. Did his ideas shape Sicilian interpretations of UFOs? Very probably. He linked Catania and Etna to an internationally recognisable contactee tradition and popularised the image of spiritually advanced extraterrestrials warning humanity. That influence preceded the island’s largest reporting wave and helped entrench contact narratives within regional popular culture.
Is there persuasive evidence that he communicated with extraterrestrials? No publicly available evidence establishes that conclusion. The claimed encounters rest mainly on personal testimony, publications created by his movement and later accounts from committed followers. Neither the volume of the material nor Siragusa’s acquittal in the 1982 criminal case turns those claims into independently verified events.
His legacy is therefore double-edged. To followers, he was a moral messenger who urged humanity away from self-destruction. To sceptical investigators, he exemplified how personal revelation, international saucer folklore and charismatic authority could overtake evidence-based inquiry. For Sicily’s wider UFO history, the most defensible conclusion lies between those positions: Siragusa was culturally important but evidentially unconvincing.
Understanding that distinction helps readers approach later Sicilian cases more carefully. Reports involving pilots, police officers, photographs or multiple witnesses should be judged on their own records, not accepted because they resemble Siragusa’s teachings and not dismissed merely because contactee folklore existed. His real, demonstrable impact was not proof that extraterrestrials visited Etna. It was the creation of a durable interpretive world in which many Sicilians could imagine that they had.
