Introduction

The Caselle incident of 30 November 1973 is often described as Italy’s classic radar-visual UFO case: airline crews, a private pilot, airport personnel and two radar sites apparently observed the same extraordinary object near Turin’s airport. Later reconstruction supports a more cautious conclusion. Something unusual was reported, but the surviving evidence does not show that every witness and radar operator was tracking one object at the same time.

The prolonged light towards the Susa Valley was largely stationary. The private pilot later pursued a light moving towards the south-east. Caselle radar produced intermittent echoes, while Mortara’s most dramatic tracks appeared mainly after the aircraft sightings had ended. What witnesses reported near the airport

The first activity began at about 6.45 pm at Turin-Caselle Airport. Military personnel operating the airport radar reportedly noticed an unidentified return near the approach path. A bright light was also seen visually towards the south-west, in the general direction of the Susa Valley. At approximately 6.48 pm, the control tower warned aircraft preparing to land that an unidentified intruder might be present.[uapcheck.com]uapcheck.comUAP CheckUAP Check

Two arriving Alitalia crews then reported a conspicuous light. The crew of flight AZ325 did not initially see anything while several minutes from landing. After the aircraft turned westwards during the final approach, the pilot and co-pilot noticed a strong white or bluish-white light about 15 to 20 degrees above the horizon. The crew of flight AZ043 also saw a light towards the Susa Valley. Those descriptions are interesting but not, by themselves, evidence of an aircraft-like object. A bright point source low in the sky can appear to shift position when its intensity changes, especially when there are few fixed visual references. The effect is particularly troublesome at night, when a pilot’s own movement and turns can make a distant light seem to move independently.

The private Piper pilot—identified in contemporary and later accounts as Riccardo Marano—provided the most dramatic testimony. He was approaching Caselle behind the airliners and initially saw no unusual light. After hearing the radio exchanges, he asked to be directed towards it and flew westwards, but still could not locate the reported object. About fifteen minutes after leaving the Caselle area, he was told that the light was behind him. The later popular version turned this episode into a prolonged high-speed chase in which the object crossed behind the aircraft, performed abrupt vertical manoeuvres and escaped towards Genoa at fantastic speed. The reconstructed account is less spectacular. The pursuit seems to have lasted roughly seven or eight minutes, at a Piper speed just below 400 kilometres per hour. On that basis, the aircraft could have covered perhaps 45 to 50 kilometres, not the roughly 110 kilometres sometimes claimed. Meanwhile, observers at Caselle continued to watch a star-like light towards the mountains until after 7.30 pm. The Alitalia crews reportedly saw it again after landing, stationary in the south-western sky. That creates the central difficulty: the light watched from the airport remained in one direction while the Piper pilot was pursuing something away to the east or south-east. How the radar and visual accounts differed

The label “radar-visual” can imply a precise correlation: a witness points to an object, radar displays a target at that position, and both systems follow it through the same movements. Caselle did not produce that kind of continuous, instrumentally documented match.

At 7.15 pm, the Caselle tower asked the military radar centre at Mortara to check an unknown echo about nine miles south-west of the airport, on a bearing of approximately 235 degrees. Caselle personnel said they could see a bright object several kilometres away and about 5,000 feet above the ground. The limitations of the Caselle equipment also matter. Later information indicated that the airport’s precision ground-controlled-approach radar, which could provide elevation information, had been out of service for several months. The functioning search radar supplied mainly horizontal position and bearing. Consequently, claims that the Caselle system measured spectacular climbs or descents are much weaker than they first appear: the working radar could not reliably provide the altitude data needed to establish them.[uapcheck.com]uapcheck.comUAP CheckUAP Check

Mortara did record a puzzling series of radar returns—but mostly later. Between about 7.57 and 8.52 pm, it logged at least twelve tracks that appeared and disappeared over different parts of Piedmont and Liguria. Their apparent speeds were calculated by comparing the locations of echoes on successive twelve-second radar sweeps. Some returns over French territory were reportedly also noticed by the Lyon control centre. The timing weakens the simplest version of the case. These dramatic Mortara tracks began well after the two airline observations and the main Piper episode. They therefore cannot automatically be treated as an instrumental record of the object seen by those pilots. A separate contact at 8.39 pm was closer to a genuine radar-visual correlation: Mortara reported a track four miles from Caselle, and airport personnel replied that they could see a bright object moving slowly near the runway. Further irregular echoes were reported late that night, and another complicated mixture of radar contacts and visual observations occurred on 4 December. Later publications sometimes combined the two dates, producing one apparently continuous event with more witnesses, more radar stations and more extraordinary manoeuvres than the records for 30 November alone support.[uapcheck.com]uapcheck.comUAP CheckUAP Check

This is why claims of a single object travelling from the Susa Valley, circling the Piper, racing across Piedmont and being followed simultaneously by several radars should be treated cautiously. The evidence instead describes overlapping episodes:

  • a long-lasting, largely stationary south-western light;
  • an intermittent return on Caselle’s less precise search radar;
  • a moving light pursued briefly by the Piper;
  • later clusters of intermittent Mortara tracks;
  • and a separate later visual contact near Caselle.

They may have had a common cause, but the available chronology does not demonstrate it.

Why contemporary reporting overstated the case

The earliest information came mainly through newspaper, radio and television interviews rather than a structured investigation. No UFO research group interviewed all the principal pilots, radar operators and airport personnel immediately after the event. The surviving first-hand material includes a small number of broadcast interviews and transcripts, but contemporary journalists did not consistently ask for exact bearings, times, aircraft headings, angular sizes or radar settings.[uapcheck.com]uapcheck.comUAP CheckUAP Check

That gap allowed uncertain details to harden into facts. Secondary retellings added an object comparable in radar size to a large airliner, speeds approaching Mach 4, abrupt altitude changes and a twenty-minute pursuit extending to Voghera or beyond. Some reports also claimed tracking by radar stations at Linate or Capo Mele. The military record is also less decisive than the phrase “officially confirmed” suggests. Italy did not establish its present formal system for collecting and technically assessing UFO reports until after the national wave of 1978. For Caselle, a later analysis associated with former Air Force consultant Igino Gatti considered atmospheric refraction but lacked the weather data and detailed witness information needed to test the idea properly. The first official material became available piecemeal, with radar information released more fully only after requests made in the 1990s. A retrospective inquiry then located most of the known participants and compared their testimony with recordings and the Mortara logs. Could ordinary causes account for the reports?

No single conventional explanation has been demonstrated for every element. The strongest sceptical interpretation is therefore not “nothing happened”, but that several unrelated or partly related effects were combined.

For the stationary south-western light, Venus and Jupiter are important candidates. Calculations reproduced in the later reconstruction place both planets in that sector of the sky. Venus was exceptionally bright and low, at roughly six degrees above the south-western horizon; Jupiter was higher but in a similar direction. Venus would not explain a verified nearby object making rapid manoeuvres. Yet the evidence for such manoeuvres comes largely from perceived movement rather than measured angular tracks or triangulation. A bright light viewed against a dark, almost featureless sky can undergo apparent motion, known as the autokinetic effect. Changes in brightness may also be interpreted as climbing or descending, as appears possible in the AZ043 description. The radar returns present a different problem. Primary radar does not merely display solid aircraft. Abnormal temperature and moisture layers can bend radar energy towards the ground, producing extraneous or displaced echoes. Aviation guidance recognises that this “anomalous propagation” or ducting can place false blips on a controller’s display, while mountains, ground structures and other clutter can complicate identification. Such effects are especially relevant when returns are intermittent, fail to form stable tracks or are not confirmed by another radar looking at the requested location.[FAA]faa.govwww.faa.gov…

This does not prove that anomalous propagation caused the Mortara contacts. Detailed atmospheric profiles from the relevant altitudes are lacking, and some reported tracks apparently moved in ways operators regarded as unusual. Why the case remains unresolved

Caselle remains Piedmont’s strongest aviation-related UFO incident because it involved professional observers, active air-traffic operations, radio exchanges and recorded radar activity. It was not merely a solitary light reported from a roadside. The airport warning, the two airline crews, the Piper’s attempted approach and the Mortara logs give the event a substantial factual core.

What the case lacks is equally important: original radar plots tied unambiguously to the pilots’ lines of sight, continuous time-synchronised tracking, accurate altitude measurements from Caselle, immediate technical interviews and complete meteorological data. Without those, it is impossible to determine whether one physical object caused all the reports.

The most defensible assessment is that Caselle contains several unresolved observations rather than one proven, high-performance craft. A bright astronomical object could plausibly explain much of the prolonged south-western sighting. Perceptual effects may have influenced some reported movement. Radar propagation or clutter could explain at least some intermittent echoes. The Piper episode and later Mortara tracks remain harder to reduce with confidence, but their separation in time and direction prevents them from serving as straightforward mutual confirmation.

Later research therefore both strengthened and weakened the case. It strengthened it by recovering witnesses and radar logs and confirming that unusual events genuinely disrupted operations around Caselle. It weakened it by showing that the famous seamless chase narrative was assembled from reports that did not align as neatly as later writers claimed. Caselle is still unresolved—but the unresolved question is what produced a complicated cluster of visual and radar anomalies, not whether radar and pilots conclusively followed one extraordinary object.
