Introduction
The Vatican became part of the Magenta UFO story only in its later, expanded form. The earliest public accounts centred on disputed papers said to describe a strange aircraft recovered in Lombardy in 1933 and studied under Benito Mussolini. Decades later, former United States intelligence officer David Grusch added a further sequence: Pope Pius XII allegedly learned where the object was being kept, secretly informed the Americans, and helped them obtain it as Fascist Italy collapsed in 1944 or 1945.
That addition matters because it transforms a doubtful Italian crash story into an international recovery operation involving the Holy See and United States intelligence. Yet no authenticated Vatican correspondence, American recovery report, transport record or physical material has been produced publicly to support the expanded narrative. Vatican archive staff say they know of no document concerning extraterrestrial life, while a major Pentagon historical review found no empirical evidence that the United States possessed or reverse-engineered off-world technology.[USCCB]usccb.orgAngels or aliens? The earliest public version stopped in Italy
The original Magenta claim emerged publicly in the 1990s, when Italian UFO researcher Roberto Pinotti said that an anonymous correspondent had sent him purported Fascist-era documents. These papers allegedly referred to an unknown aircraft, official censorship and a secret technical body sometimes called the RS/33 Cabinet. The object was said to have been moved to an aircraft facility in Lombardy, commonly identified with hangars near Vergiate.
Whatever their authenticity, the papers themselves did not publicly establish the later Vatican–American recovery story. Their central narrative was domestic: an incident near Magenta, suppression by Mussolini’s government and scientific or military examination inside Italy. Reports about the documents have reproduced alleged instructions for “absolute silence”, but their provenance remains unverified. They arrived without a demonstrated archival chain linking them to a Fascist ministry, police office, military command or named official custodian.[Interesting Engineering]interestingengineering.comInteresting EngineeringWorld's first UFO crash happened in Italy, 14 years before…10 Jul 2023 — The documents shared by Pinotti with t…
This distinction is important. The claim that something unusual was hidden by the Fascist regime and the claim that the Vatican later delivered it to the United States are not two independently supported parts of one contemporary record. The second is a later narrative layer resting on the first.
There is also a chronological complication. Pius XII did not become pope until March 1939, nearly six years after the alleged Magenta event. In 1933 he was Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, the Vatican secretary of state. That position could theoretically have given him access to diplomatic information, but it does not by itself demonstrate knowledge of a recovered craft. Any serious version of the story would need to explain when Pacelli supposedly learned of the object, through which office, and what records were created.
Recovery and transfer entered the story later
The Vatican role gained international prominence through Grusch’s June 2023 television interview. He described an object allegedly recovered at Magenta in 1933, retained in Italy until the final phase of the Second World War and then obtained by the United States after Pius XII secretly passed information to the Americans. The resulting picture was no longer simply of Fascist secrecy. It linked Mussolini’s regime, Vatican diplomacy and an American crash-retrieval programme.[Metabunk]metabunk.orgclaim a ufo crashed in 1933 italy and the us recovered it.13282They recovered a partially intact vehicle. Grusch’s appearance at a United States House hearing on 26 July 2023 greatly increased attention to his wider claims about hidden recovery and reverse-engineering programmes. The official hearing record identifies him as a former National Reconnaissance Office representative to the Pentagon’s UAP Task Force. However, the detailed Magenta and Vatican sequence had been presented publicly in media interviews rather than substantiated at the hearing with documents available for examination.[Oversight Committee]oversight.house.govOversight CommitteeUnidentified Anomalous Phenomena: Implications on National Security, Public Safety, and Government Transparency - Unit…
This difference is sometimes blurred in later reporting. Saying that a witness testified under oath about alleged secret programmes does not automatically place every earlier interview statement on the same evidential footing. The Vatican transfer account remains a reported second-hand intelligence claim: Grusch said that he had learned of it through his investigation, not that he personally witnessed the Italian recovery, inspected the object or discovered a Vatican dispatch.
The expanded version also leaves major practical questions unanswered:
- Which Vatican official received the original information?
- Was the message sent through the Secretariat of State, a papal representative or an informal wartime channel?
- Which American agency acted on it: military intelligence, the Office of Strategic Services or another organisation?
- Where was the object collected, and how was it transported out of northern Italy?
- What unit, ship, aircraft or warehouse received it?
- Why have no matching Italian, Vatican or American records been authenticated?
Wartime covert operations do not always leave complete public files. Nevertheless, the claim describes a large and technically unusual recovery involving several institutions. That should normally generate overlapping records: intelligence messages, personnel orders, transport arrangements, facility reports, inventories or later references in organisational histories. None has been publicly produced in verifiable form.

The archives have not confirmed the claim
The opening of Vatican records from the pontificate of Pius XII has made the alleged backchannel more testable than it once appeared. In March 2020, the Vatican opened the relevant pontificate’s archival collections to qualified researchers, including extensive material covering the Second World War. Scholars have since found significant correspondence about diplomacy, persecution and clandestine information networks, demonstrating that sensitive wartime records can survive and be identified.[Vatican News]vaticannews.vaholy see archives pope pius xii world war iiVatican NewsVatican opens archives on Pope Pius XIIMarch 2, 2020 — 2 Mar 2020 — The Holy See opens its archives on the pontificate of Piu…
No comparable Magenta document has emerged.
In 2024, Marco Grilli, secretary to the prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Archive, told Catholic News Service that he did not know where Grusch had obtained the allegation. Grilli said the archive had received enquiries about it, but its leadership knew of no document concerning extraterrestrial life and discouraged researchers from expecting such material there.[USCCB]usccb.orgAngels or aliens? Some researchers say Vatican archives hold UFO secrets | USCCBAngels or aliens? Some researchers say Vatican archives hold UFO secrets | USCCB…
That statement is not an absolute proof that no relevant paper exists anywhere within the Holy See’s many collections. Vatican holdings are large, divided among different offices and not uniformly catalogued. A message might also have used ordinary military or diplomatic language rather than terms such as “extraterrestrial” or “UFO”. Archive searches therefore depend on names, dates, offices and plausible record series.
Even with that qualification, the current position is negative rather than neutral. Researchers have not produced a file, catalogue entry, memorandum or contemporary witness account connecting Pius XII to an anomalous craft in Lombardy. General observations that the Vatican archives contain reports of miracles, lights or unexplained religious experiences do not corroborate a specific wartime recovery operation.[USCCB]usccb.orgAngels or aliens? Some researchers say Vatican archives hold UFO secrets | USCCBAngels or aliens? Some researchers say Vatican archives hold UFO secrets | USCCB…
American recovery records are also missing
The United States side of the narrative should in principle offer another route to confirmation. If American personnel acquired a large object from an Italian aircraft facility in 1944 or 1945, records might survive in military, diplomatic, intelligence, logistics or captured-enemy-material collections.
No authenticated record of that operation has been made public. Nor has a documented piece of material been linked through a secure chain of custody to Magenta, Vergiate, the Vatican or an American wartime unit.
The Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, or AARO, reviewed classified and unclassified archives, interviewed officials and examined allegations that the government or private companies had recovered extraterrestrial technology. Its 2024 historical report said it found no evidence that a United States investigation had confirmed extraterrestrial technology and no empirical evidence of secret reverse-engineering programmes involving off-world material.[AARO]aaro.milUnclassified Final DSD AARO Historical ReportUnclassified Final DSD AARO Historical Report…
AARO did not publish a detailed case-by-case rebuttal of the Vatican–Magenta story in that volume. Its findings therefore should not be overstated as a demonstrated solution to the alleged 1933 incident. They do, however, directly weaken the larger framework into which the Vatican claim has been placed: a continuous American recovery programme holding multiple non-human craft since the Second World War.
Why the expanding story needs stronger evidence
Extraordinary historical claims sometimes grow by linking gaps in separate records. The Magenta narrative follows that pattern. A disputed group of Italian papers establishes the proposed crash. Real Vatican wartime diplomacy supplies a plausible channel of secret communication. Real American intelligence activity in Italy supplies a possible recovery mechanism. Later testimony then joins these elements into one continuous operation.
The difficulty is that plausibility is not corroboration. The existence of Vatican backchannels during the war does not show that one carried information about a spacecraft. American access to captured Italian and German technology does not show that extraterrestrial material was among it. Secrecy explains why documents might initially be unavailable, but it cannot indefinitely serve as evidence that the documents existed.
As the story expands, the number of claims requiring proof also expands. The later version asks the reader to accept not only that an unknown object crashed near Magenta, but also that:
- Italian authorities recovered and preserved it for more than a decade.
- Vatican officials discovered its location.
- Pius XII communicated the information to the United States.
- American personnel retrieved and transported it.
- The object entered a concealed recovery programme.
- Records and physical evidence remained hidden across several institutions for generations.
Each added stage creates new opportunities for independent confirmation. Instead, the public evidence remains concentrated in later testimony and retellings derived from the same disputed foundation.
The evidence that would materially change the assessment is straightforward: an authenticated Vatican cable or diary entry; an Italian inventory identifying the stored object; an American operational or transport file; testimony from a named participant supported by contemporary records; or physical material with a documented route from the Lombardy site to a laboratory. Without such evidence, the Vatican recovery account is best treated as a prominent but unverified extension of the Magenta legend.
What the Vatican addition changed
The Vatican element strengthened the story’s cultural reach rather than its documentary foundation. It gave the Magenta claim an internationally recognisable institution, a wartime pope and a route into American UFO history. It also made the alleged Lombardy incident appear to pre-date Roswell while connecting it to the familiar idea of a long-running United States retrieval programme.
Later reporting has not supplied the missing evidence. The relevant Vatican-era archives are increasingly accessible, yet no supporting document has been identified. Vatican archive officials deny knowledge of extraterrestrial records, and the Pentagon’s broad historical investigation reported no empirical basis for American possession of off-world technology.[vaticannews.va]vaticannews.vaholy see archives pope pius xii world war iiVatican NewsVatican opens archives on Pope Pius XIIMarch 2, 2020 — 2 Mar 2020 — The Holy See opens its archives on the pontificate of Piu…
Within Lombardy’s UFO history, the Vatican claim is therefore most useful as an example of narrative expansion. The alleged 1933 crash began as a late-appearing Italian document story. It later acquired papal knowledge, secret diplomacy and an American recovery operation. Those additions made the account more dramatic and more widely discussed, but they also raised the evidential burden. So far, the evidence has not grown with the story.
