Can Potenza's Earliest UFO Claims Still Be Tested?
The 1948 and 1964 Potenza sightings remain historically notable, but their photographs and original witness files are not publicly available.

Introduction
Potenza’s earliest flying-saucer stories cannot currently be tested in the way a strong historical case should be. Later regional accounts say that residents saw a low, circular object over the city on 13 January 1948 and that somebody photographed it. They also list another Potenza sighting on 29 November 1964. Yet no publicly accessible copy of the alleged 1948 photograph, contemporary newspaper report, named witness statement or investigation file has been located. This does not make the reports worthless. The 1948 date places Potenza close to the beginning of international flying-saucer culture, while both cases help explain why the city occupies a prominent place in Basilicata’s private UFO chronologies. Their importance, however, is historical rather than evidential. At present they show that early claims entered the regional record, not that an extraordinary craft was documented.
The reported 1948 circular object
The standard version of the first case is brief. On 13 January 1948, several people in Potenza reportedly observed a circular object flying at relatively low altitude. According to later newspaper summaries, the object was also photographed. Those omissions matter because almost every useful test of an aerial observation depends on such details. An investigator would need to know where the witnesses stood, which way they were looking, whether the object crossed the sky or appeared stationary, and whether “low” described a measured altitude or merely an impression. Apparent size is especially unreliable without a known distance: a small nearby object and a large distant object can occupy the same angle in a viewer’s field of vision.
The alleged photograph ought to be the case’s most important evidence, but its existence is presently supported only by repeated statements that a photograph was taken. The public accounts do not reproduce it, identify its photographer, state what camera or film was used, or describe whether the original negative survived. There is no published examination of focus, exposure, image sequence, processing history or chain of custody. Without those elements, “photographed” is a biographical detail about the story rather than independent confirmation of the object.
A claim from the first saucer era
The date makes the report unusually early in Italian regional UFO history. The modern flying-saucer craze had begun only months earlier, after Kenneth Arnold’s highly publicised United States sighting in June 1947. Reports of discs, saucers and unusual aerial machines then circulated internationally through newspapers and radio. That timing can be read in two ways. It may make Potenza interesting as an early local response to a genuinely puzzling observation. It also raises the possibility that the circular description was influenced, consciously or otherwise, by the rapidly spreading saucer narrative. This is not evidence that the witnesses invented anything. It is a reason to seek the earliest wording rather than rely on summaries written decades after “flying saucer” had become a familiar concept.
The distinction is crucial. A contemporary report saying that witnesses saw a sharply outlined metallic disc would carry different weight from a later catalogue converting an indistinct round light into a “circular object”. Without the original account, it is impossible to determine how much descriptive detail belonged to the witnesses and how much was added during retelling.
The later 1964 Potenza sighting
Regional chronologies identify 29 November 1964 as the date of Potenza’s second early UFO report. Unlike the 1948 case, the accessible summaries provide no meaningful account of what was allegedly seen. The entry therefore functions primarily as a date-and-place marker. It establishes that a report attributed to Potenza was accepted into a later regional chronology, but it does not allow readers to reconstruct an incident. Even the description “sighting” must be treated cautiously, since that label can cover anything from a structured daylight object to a distant nocturnal light.
Its archival position is also uncertain. The Centro Ufologico Nazionale, or CUN, was created only after the alleged event: precursor groups came together during the mid-1960s, and the organisation was formally established later in that decade. That is not inherently suspicious. Historical organisations routinely preserve reports made before they existed. It does mean that the source trail should identify where the entry came from. A dated newspaper cutting, letter, diary, police report or interview transcript could give the 1964 case some evidential substance. In their absence, its exact origin and accuracy remain unknown.
The catalogue problem
A large CUN chronological catalogue available online illustrates why catalogue inclusion should not be confused with a complete case file. Its columns record date, time, locality, province, region, a classification code and an identifying number. However, the accessible version does not show the reported Potenza event of 13 January 1948 among its chronological entries. Around the relevant point it moves from December 1947 to undated 1948 material and then to sightings on 22 March 1948. This discrepancy does not prove that the two cases were removed or fabricated. The online table may represent one compilation rather than every holding in the organisation’s archives. Entries may have been excluded, renumbered, corrected or retained in separate files. Nevertheless, the mismatch weakens claims that the dates are straightforwardly confirmed by a publicly inspectable CUN register.
It also exposes a broader problem in historical UFO writing: later articles may cite “the archives” without identifying the precise document, catalogue edition or underlying source. Once several publications repeat the same concise account, repetition can create an impression of independent confirmation even when every version ultimately derives from a single undocumented entry.
What the missing records prevent
The surviving information is insufficient to decide whether either observation was genuinely anomalous. Several distinct pieces of evidence would be needed before the cases could be reassessed responsibly.
The original 1948 image. Investigators would need the negative or earliest-generation print, not merely a later reproduction. Its borders, grain, exposure and physical history could help distinguish an aerial scene from a defect, small suspended object, processing artefact or incorrectly captioned photograph.
Contemporary reporting. A Potenza or regional newspaper dated close to 13 January 1948 could establish when the story first appeared, how many witnesses were mentioned and whether the photographic claim was part of the original account. Equivalent reporting around 29 November 1964 could reveal whether that entry represents a substantial event or a single unexplained light.
Identifiable witnesses. Names, occupations and viewing locations would permit comparison between statements and reveal whether the witnesses observed independently or as one group. Recollections collected decades later would still be useful historically, but they could not substitute for records made near the time.
Basic observational data. Time, azimuth, elevation, duration, colour, sound, motion and weather are necessary for testing aircraft, astronomical objects, balloons, meteors, reflections and other conventional possibilities. Neither published summary supplies enough information for such checks.
A traceable archival reference. A file number linked to an actual dossier would allow researchers to distinguish between a full investigation, a newspaper clipping, a short catalogue card and an unsourced list entry. The absence of these materials means that no particular conventional explanation can be demonstrated either. It would be unjustified to declare that the 1948 object was a balloon, aircraft or photographic trick without knowing what the witnesses or camera actually recorded. The correct assessment is narrower: the claim is too incomplete to classify.
Why official records cannot settle the question
Italy’s modern official UFO reporting system cannot directly validate these early Potenza stories. Public statistics associated with the Italian Air Force begin in 1972, decades after both alleged events. Consequently, the absence of a 1948 or 1964 Potenza case from later Air Force statistics is expected and should not be presented as evidence against the witnesses. Equally, a case’s presence in a private chronology does not amount to official certification. The two systems cover different periods and apply different routes of collection.
The early reports therefore depend almost entirely on historical recovery. Relevant material, should it survive, is more likely to be found in newspaper collections, police or prefectural papers, municipal holdings, personal archives or the unpublished files of private UFO organisations than in the post-1972 Air Force series.
Potenza does possess substantial archival institutions, including state and municipal collections covering twentieth-century public administration, although their general holdings descriptions do not themselves identify UFO files. Neither case, however, is presently strong evidence for an extraordinary aerial event. The 1948 story has a recognisable outline but lacks its alleged photograph and original testimony. The 1964 story has little more than a date and location. The fairest classification is therefore historically notable but evidentially weak. Later reporting has kept the claims alive, but it has not supplied the missing primary material needed to strengthen them. Unless the photograph, contemporary coverage or identifiable witness files emerge, Potenza’s earliest saucer reports remain part of the history of how UFO stories were recorded in Basilicata—not cases whose unusual nature can still be demonstrated.
