Where Are Liguria's Main UFO Hotspots?

Introduction

Liguria’s main UFO “hotspots” are not single places where one repeatable phenomenon has been proved. They are reporting clusters: Genoa and its central coastal corridor, the wooded hills behind the city, and the Savona–Finale hinterland. These areas repeatedly generate accounts of isolated lights, luminous spheres and objects seen over the sea or between ridges. The pattern is real at the level of reports, but the supporting evidence is usually too thin to show that the incidents share one cause.

Genoa attracts reports because it combines a large population, a busy airport, port traffic, open sea views and steep hills that complicate estimates of distance and movement. Savona’s hinterland has become associated more specifically with glowing or metallic-looking spheres, especially since the mid-2010s. Genoa and the central coast

Genoa is Liguria’s most persistent reporting centre, but this is partly what should be expected from the region’s largest urban area. More people are watching the sky, taking photographs and sending material to newspapers or UFO organisations. The city’s geography also places aircraft, ships, satellites and distant coastal lights against relatively uncluttered sea horizons, where ordinary objects can appear unfamiliar when their size and distance are unknown.

Historical catalogues show that Genoa was producing reports long before mobile-phone footage and social media. A national case list compiled by the Centro Ufologico Nazionale records Genoa observations on several closely spaced dates in December 1973, another report from the Prà area in November 1975, and later entries across the province. These listings demonstrate continuity in reporting, but a database entry is not the same as a verified unexplained event. The value of the catalogues is comparative. They show that Genoa’s reports are neither confined to the Zanfretta period nor concentrated in one tiny location. They occur along the urban coast, in western districts such as Prà, Voltri, Pegli and Sestri Ponente, and farther inland. In 2005, for example, the same catalogue recorded reports at Serra Riccò, north of Genoa, and at Rapallo on the eastern coast. The airport effect

Genoa Airport is an especially productive setting for ambiguous imagery. The airport occupies a narrow coastal site beside the sea, so photographs may include aircraft approaching at unusual angles, birds close to the camera, reflections, ships and objects far beyond the runway. A widely discussed example appeared in July 2023, when an object photographed near the airport was promoted by some commentators as unidentified. Local coverage quickly developed into an argument over whether it was an unusual craft or a gull caught in an ambiguous frame. The debate mattered less for what the image proved than for what it exposed: a single photograph can remove information about speed, distance, flight path and scale, making a nearby bird look like a fast object over the runway. Reports continued in western Genoa in 2024, including footage from Voltri described as showing three objects. The reporting relied heavily on interpretation by a UFO group and repeated the claim that Liguria has an exceptionally high rate of sightings. The inland hills behind Genoa

The hills north and north-east of Genoa form the region’s oldest recognised cluster. Torriglia and Propata became central to Ligurian UFO history after Pier Fortunato Zanfretta’s first alleged encounter in December 1978. Contemporary enquiries collected statements from residents who said they had seen strong glows or large luminous objects in the wider district. This witness cluster is frequently presented as confirmation of Zanfretta’s account. It is more accurately described as contextual support for the limited claim that unusual lights were being reported in the area. Most witnesses did not report the beings, abduction sequence or detailed narrative later associated with the case. Nor does the existence of several reports establish that everyone saw the same object. Observations on different roads, at different times and from valleys separated by ridges can refer to unrelated sources.

The terrain is important. Inland Liguria consists of steep slopes, wooded valleys and scattered settlements, with restricted horizons and few reliable visual reference points at night. A light above a distant ridge may seem to be hovering close to a farmhouse; a moving aircraft may repeatedly disappear behind terrain; and stars or planets can appear to move when seen through broken cloud or observed from a vehicle on a winding road. These possibilities do not explain every report, but they weaken attempts to reconstruct distance, height and speed from testimony alone.

The Torriglia–Propata reports remain historically stronger than most recent smartphone sightings because they generated police documentation and multiple statements. Even so, they do not turn the district into a proven location of recurring extraordinary craft. Their significance lies in the way a dramatic central case encouraged people to notice, remember and report lights that might otherwise have passed without comment.

Savona’s hinterland and luminous spheres

Savona’s coastal strip and inland valleys form Liguria’s clearest modern reporting cluster. The recurring description is not usually a structured disc or close encounter, but one or more luminous spheres: white, orange or metallic-looking points said to hover, cross cloud layers, travel silently or appear in pairs.

The sequence was already visible by 2016, when a UFO organisation publicised four Savona-area reports, including night-vision footage said to show three spheres on 3 August. The announcement came shortly before a UFO conference in Savona, an example of how investigation, publicity and event promotion can become intertwined. A more concentrated run developed in late 2021 and 2022. Reports were published from Vado Ligure and Murialdo, followed by claims from Dego, Millesimo, Carcare and the zone between Arenzano and the Savona hinterland. One account referred to at least ten people seeing fast luminous spheres, sometimes singly and sometimes in pairs. Significantly, the investigator promoting the cases acknowledged that an unusual natural luminous phenomenon associated with cloud conditions could not be excluded.[IVG]ivg.itOpen source on ivg.it.

Further reports in 2022 described silent spheres supposedly travelling from Savona towards Calice Ligure. Claims that they performed “intelligent” manoeuvres were interpretative rather than instrumentally measured: no published radar track, calibrated camera data or independent trajectory analysis established acceleration beyond conventional capabilities. By late 2023, local investigators were calling the Savona and Finale hinterlands “hot zones”. A reported observation from Genoa Quarto described three lights apparently over the sea towards Savona, remaining stationary before moving west. The cluster continued into 2024. Residents in Savona and Loano reported luminous or grey spherical objects by day and night. An association later identified a broader corridor between Albenga and Genoa, naming Colle Melogno, Pian dei Corsi near Finale Ligure, Madonna degli Angeli above Savona, and the Genoese districts between Voltri and Pegli. This is the most specific published map of Liguria’s recent claimed hotspots. Why these places generate repeated reports

The Genoa and Savona clusters probably combine several different effects rather than one recurring object. The most important are observational opportunity, difficult geography and changing sources of artificial light.

Population and publicity. Genoa and Savona have more observers, local news outlets and active investigators than sparsely populated parts of Liguria. Once an area is described as a hotspot, residents are more likely to film ambiguous lights and submit them to the same organisations. Public conferences and repeated press stories can create a feedback loop in which increased attention produces increased reporting.

Sea horizons and mountain ridges. A light over the sea has few scale cues, while an inland light may be repeatedly hidden by ridges and cloud. Apparent hovering, sudden disappearance and sharp changes of direction can result from observer movement, intervening terrain or cloud rather than from the object itself.

Aircraft, ships and drones. Genoa’s airport and major port create a crowded visual environment. Aircraft seen head-on can appear stationary before turning; landing lights can overwhelm navigation lights; and ships or offshore activity may be misplaced in the sky when the horizon is poorly visible. Drones add another class of small, quiet and manoeuvrable objects, particularly near populated coastal areas.

Satellites and space launches. Starlink satellites have generated waves of UFO reports internationally because freshly launched groups appear as organised strings of lights. Individual satellites can also brighten briefly as their angle to the Sun changes. Camera limitations. Digital zoom, autofocus hunting, image stabilisation and compression can turn a small point of light into a pulsating disc or sphere. A bright object photographed through haze may acquire rings, changing colours or an apparently solid outline that was not visible to the naked eye. These effects are especially relevant to the low-resolution clips that dominate recent Ligurian reporting.

Why clusters do not prove a common cause

A convincing hotspot requires more than repeated dots on a map. Investigators would need a consistent reporting system, precise times and locations, original files, weather records, astronomical checks, aircraft and satellite data, and a clear method for removing duplicates and explained cases. Liguria’s public material rarely provides this complete chain.

There is also a selection problem. UFO catalogues record what people chose to report and what particular organisations chose to retain. They do not measure how often residents looked at the sky without seeing anything unusual. Nor do they reliably distinguish a heavily publicised district from one where similar lights occur but attract no press attention. The clusters nevertheless have historical value. Genoa shows how an urban coast, airport and famous earlier case can sustain decades of reports. Torriglia and Propata demonstrate how multiple light observations can become attached to one dominant narrative without verifying its most extraordinary elements. Savona’s hinterland shows the modern pattern: repeated sphere reports, active local investigators, quick news circulation and only limited independent technical evidence.

The most defensible conclusion is therefore modest. Liguria contains several durable reporting hotspots, with Genoa and the Savona–Finale corridor standing out most clearly. They deserve documentation because repeated testimony can reveal genuine aerial, astronomical or atmospheric events. At present, however, the clusters are better evidence of recurring observation and interpretation than of a single unknown presence operating over the region.
