These numbers require care. They come from a civilian UFO organisation’s archive, not from a complete government census, and multiple reports may describe the same stimulus. Parliament and the Navy took the alarm seriously

This is an important but limited finding. It confirms that officials regarded the reports as sufficiently numerous or disruptive to justify a significant search. What is the best evidence?
The Abruzzo record contains abundant testimony but little surviving instrument-quality evidence. Its value varies sharply by source.
The parliamentary record is the firmest foundation. It establishes public concern, a report involving a naval patrol and a substantial Navy search. The statistical archives establish a reporting concentration. The civilian 1978 database gives Abruzzo unusually high provincial rates, while later reporting based on Air Force material counted 18 Abruzzo cases between 1972 and 2013. The connection is emotionally powerful but evidentially weak. The accessible sources do not present an official accident report establishing that an unidentified aerial or underwater phenomenon caused the sinking. Nor do they provide physical traces linking the boat to any reported object. The deaths and the sighting wave occurred in the same coastal setting and period, but proximity in time is not proof of causation.
This distinction is important because the tragedy often acts as the narrative centre of later television and internet versions. Once an unexplained death is placed beside reports of lights, each story appears to validate the other. In reality, the cause of a maritime accident must be established through weather, vessel condition, damage, navigation and post-mortem evidence. Without that chain, the UFO connection remains speculation.
Abruzzo’s landscape encourages convincing misidentifications
The region combines a busy Adriatic air corridor, a commercial airport near Pescara, fishing activity, dark mountain skies and high ground capable of producing striking cloud formations. That mixture creates many opportunities for ordinary objects to appear unfamiliar, especially when distance and scale are difficult to judge.

A small nearby object and a large distant one can produce the same angular appearance.
Modern satellite formations add another source of reports. Research on low-Earth-orbit constellations notes that groups of satellites may be plainly visible to the naked eye, particularly near twilight at European latitudes. Local investigation preserved the story but also enlarged it
Civilian researchers have played a major role in collecting Abruzzo testimony. The wider wave is historically real, some reports are too poorly documented to resolve, and several individual claims are plausibly attributable to weather, astronomy, aircraft or errors of distance and perception. Abruzzo’s lasting significance is ultimately institutional as much as ufological. The 1978 alarm showed how a cluster of ambiguous observations could spread through coastal communities, enter Parliament and prompt military surveillance. It also exposed the central difficulty that still shapes UFO research: many witnesses can sincerely see something unusual, yet without timely measurements and preserved records, the distance between “unidentified” and “extraordinary” cannot be reliably crossed.
