That basic outline is almost everything that can presently be established from accessible sources. No publicly available photograph, physical trace, second witness statement or detailed investigation report has emerged. Even the original newspaper account is difficult to examine in full through current online archives. The case is therefore memorable because humanoid reports are unusual in Basilicata, but it is not strong evidence for an extraordinary encounter. Its lasting value lies mainly in showing how a striking personal story can enter regional UFO history despite leaving only a very thin documentary trail.
The reported encounter in the park
Montereale is a prominent public park on a hill close to central Potenza, rather than an isolated rural site. However, the accessible retrospective does not provide the details needed to reconstruct the event reliably. It does not state:
- the precise time or lighting conditions;
- exactly where beside or within the park the figure appeared;
- how long the observation lasted;
- the distance between the witness and the figure;
- whether the being moved, spoke or interacted with him;
- what made its appearance non-human rather than merely unusual;
- whether anyone else was nearby;
- or whether the witness contacted police, medical staff or another authority.
Later summaries sometimes characterise the figure as a small humanoid, but the surviving searchable material does not preserve a sufficiently detailed description to test that wording. The distinction matters. Apparent height can be badly distorted when distance, terrain, posture and reference objects are uncertain. Without the original testimony, even a basic feature such as the figure’s size cannot be treated as securely documented.
The available witness account
The story appears to rest on one unidentified witness. No name, interview transcript or signed statement is readily available, and the employer is described only in general terms. Protecting a witness’s identity is not inherently suspicious, particularly in a case that could attract ridicule. Yet anonymity makes later verification much more difficult: researchers cannot readily establish the witness’s location, opportunity to observe, consistency over time or possible familiarity with the park.
The account’s apparent connection to La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno gives it more traceability than an entirely anonymous internet story. A private catalogue records claims judged relevant to UFO research; it does not necessarily certify that an event occurred as described. There is also no clear indication that the report entered the Italian Air Force’s official UFO system. The distinction nevertheless limits claims that the case was officially investigated. The Air Force instructs witnesses to complete a detailed form and submit it through a Carabinieri station, allowing investigators to compare the observation with aircraft movements, human activity and natural phenomena. Why the claim remains weakly supported
The central problem is not that the story is necessarily false. It is that the evidence is too incomplete to distinguish an extraordinary encounter from several ordinary possibilities.
A person seen briefly in or near a wooded urban park could have appeared strange because of poor illumination, unusual clothing, a crouched posture, disability, intoxication or the witness’s viewing angle. An animal glimpsed while standing, climbing or partly obscured by vegetation might also be interpreted as humanlike. Stress and surprise can make observers remember ambiguous shapes as more definite than they originally appeared. None of these explanations can be demonstrated here, because the account lacks the observational detail needed to compare them.
Three missing forms of evidence are particularly important.
Independent corroboration: No second witness is identified, despite the urban setting. A solitary observation can still be sincere, but it gives investigators no independent description against which to check height, movement, position or duration.
Contemporaneous documentation: No accessible photograph, sketch, recording, police report or complete newspaper interview accompanies the claim. The surviving public version is a brief retrospective published nearly eighteen years later.
Physical or environmental evidence: There is no report of footprints, damaged vegetation, biological material or another trace that could be documented and tested. Nor is there a known site examination establishing where the encounter supposedly occurred.
These gaps prevent the case from being meaningfully “unresolved” in the stronger investigative sense. An unresolved case normally contains enough information to test conventional explanations, even if no explanation succeeds. Montereale is better classified as insufficiently documented: there is too little information to conduct that test.
An unusual exception in Basilicata’s UFO record
Most reported Basilicata incidents involve lights, discs or other objects in the sky. The Montereale story stands apart because its central claim concerns a being at ground level. That makes it easier to remember and repeat, but not more evidentially persuasive. Regional summaries naturally give unusual cases more attention than routine reports of distant lights, creating the risk that memorability will be mistaken for reliability.
The date also places the claim in a period for which official and private records diverge sharply. The fairest assessment is that somebody appears to have reported an unusual experience near Montereale park on 13 May 2000. Beyond that limited conclusion, the surviving record cannot establish what was seen. The case belongs in Basilicata’s UFO history as a weakly sourced humanoid claim and an example of poor archival preservation—not as a confirmed close encounter or persuasive evidence of a non-human visitor.
