Introduction
Aosta Valley’s best-known UFO statistic is also its most misleading: local reporting has credited the region with more than 80 sightings since 1947, while Italian Air Force statistics listed only two cases between 1972 and 2013. The figures look irreconcilable, but they do not count the same thing. The larger total is a broad historical compilation assembled from press stories, witness accounts, photographs and specialist catalogues. The disagreement therefore tells us more about record-keeping than about the number of mysterious objects over the Alps. It shows how a regional UFO chronology can grow through decades of retelling, while an official archive remains narrow because it applies different dates, procedures and admission rules. How the figure of 80 reports emerged
The claim of “more than 80 sightings” appeared prominently in Aosta Valley coverage in March 2014. The article said that reports had been recorded from 1947 to 2013 and identified the latest as a photograph taken at La Thuile on 12 July 2013 by a visiting mother and daughter. That chronology illustrates the inclusive character of the larger number. Its entries cover very different kinds of material:
- observations made before Italy established its modern official reporting system;
- newspaper reports and retrospective recollections;
- photographs or films submitted to journalists or private researchers;
- events described as possible UFOs even when an ordinary explanation was suggested;
- separate witness reports that may or may not represent separate incidents.
The 1967 entry, for example, concerned fiery lights that the same local account said were probably fragments associated with a Soviet space launch. A strange light reported in December 1985 was described as possibly a bright meteor. There is also a basic provenance problem: the published article did not provide a case-by-case list of all 80 reports or explain precisely which archive produced that total. The reader can inspect several examples, but cannot audit the full number, check for duplicates or determine how many incidents were subsequently explained.
Other published totals reinforce that caution. A later report in La Stampa, citing the Italian Centre for UFO Studies, said that Aosta Valley had recorded more than 50 sightings since 1947, not more than 80. These figures need not prove that one compiler made an error. Private catalogues can differ because they use different sources, geographical boundaries and definitions of a case. One archive may include every press clipping; another may require a witness interview or fuller documentation. One may merge several reports of the same light, while another records them separately. The variation from 29 to more than 50 and more than 80 is itself evidence that the regional total is not a single standardised measurement.
What the Air Force statistics include
Italy’s official system developed in response to the large national wave of reports in 1978, after which the government designated the Italian Air Force as the institution responsible for collecting, checking and monitoring UFO reports. Under the current procedure, a witness completes a reporting form and submits it to a Carabinieri station. The official category is deliberately limited. Once checks are complete, an episode is classified as an unidentified flying object when investigators cannot establish a technical or natural explanation from the information available. That wording does not certify that the object was an alien vehicle, nor does it establish that every detail of the witness account was physically accurate. The official total should therefore be read as the output of an administrative pipeline, not as a comprehensive census of everything seen in the regional sky. A sighting that remained in a newspaper archive, was sent only to a private investigator or was never formally reported could not be expected to appear in the same dataset.
Why the totals diverge
The gap is produced by several overlapping differences rather than one hidden contradiction.
The periods are not identical. The regional figure begins in 1947. The Air Force comparison begins in 1972, and the formal institutional role was established after the 1978 wave. The larger number counts reports, not necessarily unexplained cases. Private archives do not agree with one another. The published Aosta Valley totals of 29, more than 50 and more than 80 demonstrate that inclusion rules matter even before the official statistics enter the comparison. Population and opportunity affect reporting. Aosta Valley is Italy’s smallest region by population. A specialist national analysis placed it among the regions where low population appeared broadly consistent with a low number of recorded events. Why both figures can be technically correct
The claim that Aosta Valley accumulated more than 80 UFO reports can be correct in the limited sense that a compiler found more than 80 accounts, clippings, images or testimonies fitting a broad definition. The statement that the Air Force recorded two regional cases from 1972 to 2013 can also be correct because it refers to a much narrower official series.

The most important word is therefore not “sightings” but dataset. Before comparing totals, readers need to know who collected the reports, the period covered, whether explained cases were retained, how duplicates were handled and whether formal submission was required.
What the clash reveals about Aosta Valley
The numerical dispute weakens any simple claim that Aosta Valley experienced an exceptional concentration of unexplained aircraft. The region certainly developed a sizeable body of UFO stories, including several visually striking incidents. Yet the supporting record is fragmented, and even private organisations have produced markedly different totals. That does not mean the other reports were false. Some may never have been formally submitted; some may have lacked enough information for investigation; others may have been ordinary phenomena recorded because they initially appeared mysterious. The available totals cannot tell us how those possibilities divide.
The fairest conclusion is that Aosta Valley has a rich informal sighting history but a very small official case record. The “80 versus two” contrast is not evidence that the Air Force disproved or concealed 78 incidents. Nor does the larger number override the official files. It is a comparison between a broad cultural archive and a selective investigative archive—two records built for different purposes, with different thresholds and different meanings.
