Introduction

The first investigation groups in Palermo and Catania

Organised Sicilian interest began before the large UFO clubs of the 1970s. In Catania, journalist Franco Brancatelli helped establish the Centre for Space Studies and Research in 1958 with Alfredo Scalia, Giuseppe Pappalardo, Aldo Turiano and the young Eugenio Siragusa. The organisation had sections devoted to astronomy, astronautics, model rockets and flying saucers. The early Catania circle was therefore closer to a contact movement than to a modern witness-investigation team. Its historical importance lies less in the quality of its evidence than in the infrastructure it created. Lectures, personal networks and newspaper coverage gave Sicilians places to discuss aerial mysteries and generated documents that later researchers could recover. During the 1960s, Sicily also gained representatives of early national organisations. Alfredo Scalia in Catania and Amleto Pezzati in Palermo served as local secretaries for the Centre for the Study of Electromagnetic Aviation, an early Italian UFO body. Meanwhile, Siragusa’s later Centre for Cosmic Brotherhood developed into a prominent contactee movement around Catania and Nicolosi. A different model expanded in the 1970s. Inspired by specialist magazines and the Italian sighting wave of 1973, dozens of small clubs and individual researchers appeared across Sicily. A later history published by the Sicilian branch of the Italian Centre for UFO Studies estimates that more than 50 groups or independent investigators were active on the island during the second half of the decade. The movement remained fragmented. Antonio Blanco attempted in 1977 to combine the island’s principal organisations in a Sicilian Regional UFO Federation, but the project failed. That timing proved important. A sudden increase in reports requires local people who can reach witnesses before memories change, newspaper accounts are recycled or physical details disappear. Palermo and Catania offered the beginnings of such a network. Their volunteers could gather local press stories, take statements and pass information to a national organisation rather than leaving each sighting isolated in a newspaper column or private notebook.

The Palermo branch also helped turn investigation into a public and semi-formal activity. It organised a regional conference on the credibility of UFO phenomena in scientific investigation on 17–18 November 1979. Further conferences on anomalous celestial phenomena followed in 1981 and 1984, with sponsorship from the Sicilian regional authorities. From press cuttings to structured case files

The earliest local archives were generally personal collections. Investigators saved reports from newspapers such as La Sicilia, Giornale di Sicilia, Corriere di Sicilia and smaller provincial publications. Such cuttings were crucial because many sightings never reached the police, the Air Force or national news agencies. A brief local report might preserve a date, village, witness occupation, direction of travel or description unavailable anywhere else.

Press archives also introduced serious problems. Newspaper reports frequently condensed several witnesses into one account, omitted times and viewing directions, or added dramatic language. Identical stories could be reprinted by several papers, creating the false appearance of multiple independent cases. A careful archivist therefore had to determine whether two articles described separate events, copied the same agency report or referred to different stages of one developing story.

Direct testimony offered but brought other difficulties. Investigators could ask witnesses about duration, angular size, weather, nearby aircraft, stars and the Moon, yet interviews were not always recorded verbatim and may have taken place months or years after the event. The surviving file can therefore range from a detailed questionnaire with maps and correspondence to little more than a newspaper clipping or catalogue summary.

The regional catalogue developed by investigators associated with the Italian Centre for UFO Studies was designed to impose order on this uneven material. The Catalogue of Sightings for the Sicily Region forms part of a national regional-catalogue project launched in 1981. Each Sicilian entry receives a code combining the year, province and sequence number. The catalogue also records the reported date, time, location, event type, possible identification and source category. Question marks identify missing information, while special markings distinguish photographs, films and cases whose connection with conventional UFO reporting is doubtful. Catania investigator Antonio Rampulla became one of the central figures in this work. Active in organised ufology from the 1980s, he participated in national documentation projects and helped manage the computerised Sicilian catalogue. The Italian Centre for UFO Studies states that his archive and associated research have contributed to a collection of approximately 5,000 Sicilian reports dating from 1900 onwards. Other local researchers added provincial depth. Pietro Torre collected reports from the Messina area and published two volumes on unusual phenomena in the province in 1998 and 2000. Salvatore Foresta concentrated on local investigations and historical research, while former Palermo investigators maintained continuity with the CUN branch active during the 1978 wave. Digitisation changed the scale of the project. Records that once existed as separate binders, letters and cuttings could be searched and compared through computer databases. A later national system, CisuCat, was designed as a rapidly updated list containing basic information such as date, time, place and report type. What the archives reveal about Sicily

This is an important interpretive caution. A catalogue map may partly show the geography of observers, journalists and researchers rather than the geography of an unknown physical phenomenon. Palermo and Catania were large population centres, transport hubs and media markets, but they were also the island’s principal investigative bases. Higher totals around them cannot automatically be treated as evidence that unusual objects favoured those locations.

The archives are particularly useful for reconstructing sighting waves. Investigators can compare dates, descriptions and newspaper publication patterns to ask whether several communities independently reported a similar phenomenon or whether one widely circulated story encouraged later claims. They can also test recurring ordinary explanations, including bright planets, meteors, aircraft, balloons, satellites, lanterns and unusual atmospheric conditions.

They preserve changes in language as well. Early reports often spoke of flying saucers or discs, while later accounts increasingly described lights, spheres, formations or unidentified aerial phenomena. Contactee organisations interpreted sightings within stories about extraterrestrial visitors, whereas more methodical groups attempted to separate the witness’s observation from the explanation attached to it. The archive therefore records both aerial reports and the changing culture through which Sicilians understood them.

Local collections can also recover overlooked historical cases. Researchers may find a brief account in an old provincial newspaper, then compare it with maps, weather records or other editions of the same paper. Occasionally this strengthens the chronology or identifies additional witnesses. In other cases, archival work weakens a celebrated claim by revealing that later retellings changed the date, exaggerated the number of observers or omitted an ordinary explanation.

What regional archives cannot establish

The greatest misunderstanding is to treat the size of an archive as a measure of unexplained activity. The Sicilian catalogue deliberately includes reports regardless of credibility, completeness, strangeness or eventual identification. It also accepts marginal material such as photographs of objects not noticed at the time, isolated entity claims and alleged effects reported without a visible object. An entry marked unidentified does not necessarily describe an object that resisted a full scientific investigation. It may simply lack enough information for any confident conclusion. A distant light seen briefly, without an exact direction, elevation, duration or weather record, can remain unidentified because the evidence is poor. “Unresolved” is therefore not the same as “unexplainable”.

The Sicilian collections are also private archives shaped by the interests and methods of their custodians. Much of the detailed supporting material is not fully available online, and the regional catalogue itself advises researchers to request confirmation because records are continually corrected and expanded. Some entries display source categories rather than complete document images or witness transcripts. Organisational histories require similar caution. Much of the surviving account of Sicilian UFO groups has been written by participants or successor organisations. These sources are indispensable for names, dates and internal developments, but their assessments of rival groups, personalities and investigative standards are not neutral. Claims about which association was most scientific or responsible should be read as institutional viewpoints unless supported by independent records.

Private archives should also be distinguished from the Italian Air Force’s official reporting system. Since the 1970s, the Air Force has collected reports primarily to assess possible implications for flight and national security. Witnesses can submit a formal report through the Carabinieri for forwarding and archiving. The lasting achievement of Sicily’s archivists

The most defensible achievement of Palermo and Catania investigators is preservation. They converted an unstable mixture of newspaper stories, personal memories and club correspondence into a regional historical record. Without that work, much of Sicily’s 1970s UFO wave and many smaller provincial reports would now survive only as folklore or scattered references.

Their second achievement was methodological continuity. The organisations changed, branches dissolved and many enthusiasts left the subject after each wave of publicity. Yet a smaller network continued collecting, indexing and revisiting reports. The result is not proof that Sicily experienced thousands of extraordinary vehicles. It is something more modest but historically useful: a searchable record of what Sicilians said they saw, what information investigators managed to preserve, which explanations were considered and how the island’s UFO culture changed from early contact groups to computerised catalogues.

That distinction gives the archives their real value. They are strongest as evidence of reporting patterns, media influence, witness experience and local investigative practice. They are weakest when incomplete catalogue entries are presented as a numerical case for alien activity. Read critically, Sicily’s UFO archives do not settle the mystery. They show how the mystery was built, recorded and repeatedly reinterpreted.
