Introduction
In July 1979, people at a campsite in Rhêmes-Notre-Dame reportedly watched several metallic-grey objects above the valley, each shaped like a greatly elongated rugby ball. That vivid description has given the episode a lasting place in Aosta Valley’s UFO history. Yet almost everything needed to assess it properly is missing: the surviving public account gives no exact date, time, duration, direction of travel, apparent size, witness names, photographs or investigation result. It does not even establish clearly how many people supplied independent testimony.[AostaCronaca]valledaostaglocal.itufo dal 1947 ad oggi circa 80 avvistamenti in valleAostaCronacaUFO: Dal 1947 ad oggi circa 80 avvistamenti in Valle - Valledaostaglocal.it…

The fairest verdict is therefore unresolved but weakly documented. Several people may have seen the phenomenon, which would make it more interesting than a solitary glimpse. However, “multiple witnesses” adds real evidential weight only when their accounts are recorded separately and compared. No such statements have surfaced publicly for the Rhêmes campsite case.
The reported elongated objects
The principal accessible source is a 2014 regional retrospective covering alleged UFO activity in Aosta Valley since 1947. Its entire entry for the incident says that, in July 1979, several objects were observed above a campsite at Rhêmes-Notre-Dame. They were described as metallic grey and shaped like very elongated rugby balls. The article provides no further narrative and cites no contemporary newspaper report, police document or named investigator for this particular entry.[AostaCronaca]valledaostaglocal.itufo dal 1947 ad oggi circa 80 avvistamenti in valleAostaCronacaUFO: Dal 1947 ad oggi circa 80 avvistamenti in Valle - Valledaostaglocal.it…
That leaves a small core of information:
- Place: a campsite at Rhêmes-Notre-Dame, in an enclosed Alpine valley.
- Date: July 1979, without a specific day.
- Number of objects: several.
- Appearance: elongated, oval or spindle-like forms.
- Colour: metallic grey.
- Witness situation: apparently associated with campers, but not documented through named statements.
Even these details require care. The Italian wording uses an impersonal construction meaning that the objects “were observed”. It does not specify whether one camper, several campers or a later collector produced the description. The widespread characterisation of the episode as a multiple-witness case is plausible in a campsite setting, but the surviving sentence does not prove that several people independently reported the same features.[AostaCronaca]valledaostaglocal.itufo dal 1947 ad oggi circa 80 avvistamenti in valleAostaCronacaUFO: Dal 1947 ad oggi circa 80 avvistamenti in Valle - Valledaostaglocal.it…
Nor does “metallic grey” necessarily establish a solid metal surface. At an unknown distance, a bright cloud, balloon envelope or aircraft reflecting diffuse sunlight can appear silver-grey. Likewise, the rugby-ball comparison conveys outline rather than scale. Without a fixed reference such as a mountain ridge, tree line or known aircraft, witnesses could not reliably determine whether the objects were small and nearby or large and distant.
Why several witnesses would matter
A genuine group observation can be stronger than an isolated report. If campers standing in different positions simultaneously saw several objects, agreed on their movement and independently recorded similar shapes, the possibility of an individual visual defect, private misunderstanding or invented story would be reduced. Separate observers might also provide useful differences in viewing angle, allowing investigators to estimate distance or trajectory.
But witness numbers alone do not settle what was seen. People gathered at one campsite would have shared much the same line of sight and atmospheric conditions. If one person pointed out an unusual cloud or distant aircraft and described it as a “metallic rugby ball”, others might naturally adopt the same language. They would then be multiple witnesses to a real visual stimulus, but not necessarily independent witnesses to an extraordinary object.
Research on eyewitness memory shows why the distinction matters. Initial accounts taken promptly and without contamination can be valuable, but discussion between co-witnesses may alter later recollection. Experimental work has found markedly lower accuracy for details witnesses discussed together than for details they had not shared, a process commonly called memory conformity.[nih.gov]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govRethinking the Reliability of Eyewitness MemoryEyewitnesses typically provide reliable evidence on an initial, uncontaminated memor…
For Rhêmes, the ideal evidence would therefore be separate statements written before the campers compared impressions. Investigators would want to know whether each person independently mentioned the elongated shape, grey colour and number of objects. They would also ask whether anyone saw wings, tails, windows, rotation, changing formation or disappearance behind terrain. None of that material is presently available in the public record.
The absence of names is especially limiting. It prevents later researchers from checking whether the witnesses were adults or children, tourists or local residents, experienced mountain observers or first-time visitors. It also makes it impossible to determine whether later summaries combined several accounts, simplified one account or repeated information copied from an earlier catalogue.
The missing investigation trail
Italian military reporting procedures provide a useful benchmark for what a well-documented case could contain. A regional article explaining the system says that reports reaching the authorities could be recorded on a detailed form and checked against weather information, aircraft movements, radar data and possible meteorological balloons. A case remained officially unidentified only when no technical or natural explanation could be established from the available information; that designation did not authenticate an exotic craft or even assess the witness’s general reliability.[AostaCronaca]valledaostaglocal.itufo dal 1947 ad oggi circa 80 avvistamenti in valleAostaCronacaUFO: Dal 1947 ad oggi circa 80 avvistamenti in Valle - Valledaostaglocal.it…
No comparable case file has been publicly linked to the Rhêmes event. There is no disclosed police report, meteorological reconstruction, radar check or campsite interview. The national map derived from Italian Air Force data lists only two official UFO reports for the whole of Aosta Valley between 1972 and 2013, but it does not identify the Rhêmes episode as one of them. The map therefore cannot be used to claim that the 1979 sighting underwent formal military investigation.[Centro Ufologico Nazionale]centroufologiconazionale.netCentro Ufologico Nazionale
This is important because later regional chronologies and official statistics count different things. A sighting can enter local UFO history through a newspaper cutting, private catalogue or recollection without ever reaching the Carabinieri or Air Force. The Rhêmes case currently looks more like a catalogue entry than a recoverable investigation.
The lack of a precise date creates another obstacle. With only “July 1979”, researchers cannot confidently retrieve the day’s weather charts, identify balloon launches, check aviation notices or search local newspapers within a narrow window. Even a date and approximate hour would materially improve the prospects of testing ordinary explanations.
Balloons, aircraft and Alpine clouds
No conventional explanation can be demonstrated from the surviving information, but several deserve consideration.
Balloons fit some elements of the description. A group of elongated balloons or aerostatic objects could look grey or metallic in reflected light and move together with the wind. Yet the record says nothing about drifting, bobbing, changing altitude or maintaining formation. Without apparent size, speed and duration, the balloon possibility remains neither confirmed nor excluded.
Aircraft are another broad possibility. Seen at a distance or at an unusual angle, fuselages can appear as featureless elongated bodies, particularly when wings blend into haze or align with the observer’s sightline. Several aircraft following a route could produce several similar forms. Against this, the summary does not mention engine noise, contrails, wings or steady point-to-point flight—but silence in such a compressed account is not evidence that these features were absent.
Lenticular and other mountain-wave clouds are especially relevant to an Alpine valley. Lenticular clouds form when stable, moist air flows across high terrain and condenses within standing atmospheric waves. They can have sharply defined, smooth, lens-like or elongated profiles and may appear almost stationary even while strong winds pass through them. Meteorological authorities regularly note their resemblance to stereotypical flying saucers and their association with mountainous landscapes.[Met Office]weather.metoffice.gov.ukMet Office Unusual cloud formationsMet OfficeUnusual cloud formations - Met Office…
A row of separate cloud lenses could account for the report of several similarly shaped objects. Low-angle sunlight can also give smooth cloud surfaces a silvery or grey appearance. However, this explanation becomes less persuasive if the original witnesses saw rapid independent manoeuvres, passage in front of nearby terrain or consistently solid edges over a long interval. Because no movement or duration was preserved, the decisive clues are missing.
Alpine terrain can compound uncertainty in other ways. Peaks interrupt the horizon, obscure objects and make speed difficult to judge. A phenomenon moving behind a ridge may appear to vanish abruptly, while an object approaching along the valley axis may seem nearly stationary. Differences in sunlight between the valley floor and higher air can further exaggerate brightness and apparent solidity.
A case remembered more clearly than it was recorded
The Rhêmes campsite episode matters because it is one of the region’s few reports involving several structured-looking objects rather than a single unexplained light. Its unusual “elongated rugby ball” description is memorable, and a campsite potentially supplied a group of observers rather than one isolated witness. Those features justify retaining it in the history of Aosta Valley sightings.
They do not, however, make it one of the region’s strongest cases. The public account appears decades after the event and reduces it to one sentence. It lacks the basic observational data required to distinguish solid objects from balloons, distant aircraft or mountain clouds. Most importantly, the supposed witness group has left no accessible collection of independent testimonies.
Later reporting has therefore preserved the claim without strengthening it. No photograph, contemporary article, official file or renewed interview has emerged in the accessible record to add detail or corroboration. The incident remains unidentified in the everyday sense that the reported objects cannot now be securely identified. That is different from having survived a thorough investigation.
The most defensible assessment is that campers may indeed have noticed several striking, similarly shaped objects over Rhêmes-Notre-Dame in July 1979. The report is too sparse to dismiss as a known phenomenon, but also far too incomplete to support claims of extraordinary craft. Its chief lesson for Aosta Valley’s UFO history is evidential: several witnesses can make a case promising, yet without separate statements, precise circumstances and contemporary checks, a memorable group sighting can still leave almost nothing that later investigators are able to test.
