That design serves two purposes. First, it preserves information that rapidly becomes unreliable: precise direction, duration, cloud cover and apparent angular position are often forgotten or unconsciously reconstructed. The procedure’s safety focus also explains why the Air Force, rather than a scientific institute devoted to extraterrestrial life, holds institutional responsibility. The immediate official questions are whether an object presents an airspace concern, corresponds to authorised or detectable activity, or indicates something that existing systems have not identified. The official tables do not separate these categories by evidential strength. A case supported by several trained observers and independent instrumentation may appear in the same type of list as a single-witness light with uncertain distance. Readers should consequently resist treating every official entry as equally puzzling.

The current Air Force table lists 182 officially catalogued sightings across Italy from 2001 to June 2026. Eight are assigned to Apulia: one each in 2001, 2002, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2021, plus two in 2010. Those numbers are strikingly lower than counts assembled by regional researchers from newspapers, online reports and private archives. The apparent contradiction disappears once the collections are understood. A private catalogue may retain resolved cases, unverified tips, historical recollections and duplicate media reports. Low official numbers can also reflect reporting behaviour. Some witnesses never approach the Carabinieri; others report only to journalists or civilian investigators. A photograph posted online without an accompanying form, precise time and location may become widely discussed while remaining absent from the official archive. Conversely, an official case may attract almost no press attention.

What the official label does — and does not — establish

Official investigation strengthens an Apulian report in one limited but meaningful respect: it shows that the event was formally recorded and subjected to at least an institutional search for known causes. That is more substantial than an unsupported online claim. For assessing Apulia’s UFO history, the most defensible reading is therefore graded rather than binary. A report may be explained, insufficiently documented, or officially unidentified. The unidentified label marks the end of the official elimination process; it is not the beginning of proof that something extraordinary crossed the Apulian sky.
