Introduction
Liguria’s reputation as a centre of UFO mystery was not created by a large body of strong sightings. It was created mainly by the repeated public retelling of one extraordinary and disputed story: security guard Pier Fortunato Zanfretta’s alleged encounters near Torriglia from December 1978 onwards. Newspapers turned an alarming local incident into national news; television supplied faces, voices, reconstructions and hypnotic testimony; later films, talk shows, podcasts and social media kept the story available to new audiences.
This matters because the media did more than report the case. Coverage gradually expanded its meaning. A confused night-time episode became an abduction narrative, Torriglia became a recognised UFO location, and almost any later photograph of an uncertain object over Genoa could be linked back to Zanfretta. Repetition increased the story’s familiarity, but not necessarily its evidential strength. National coverage made Zanfretta the face of Ligurian UFOs
The first reports contained ingredients that were unusually attractive to journalists: an ordinary working man, an isolated mountain road, a frightened radio call, colleagues who found him distressed, police involvement and reports of strange lights in nearby communities. These details gave the story a firmer news framework than an unsupported claim made years later. They did not prove an alien encounter, but they allowed editors to present the episode as a genuine mystery rather than simply a piece of fantasy.
Journalist Rino Di Stefano’s article for the weekly magazine Gente, published on 20 January 1979, was especially important. It placed Zanfretta’s account alongside statements from his colleagues and descriptions of the security company’s response. The magazine format gave room for narrative detail, photographs and dramatic quotations. The story’s appearance on Portobello, Enzo Tortora’s hugely popular television programme, marked another step. A witness who had previously existed for most Italians as a name in print now appeared before a mass audience. Television could make his anxiety seem immediate, but its entertainment setting also encouraged audiences to treat him as an unusual character. Zanfretta later complained that he felt mocked by the programme and described receiving nuisance telephone calls from strangers. This tension followed the case throughout its media life. Zanfretta was often presented simultaneously as a sincere, troubled witness and as a figure of spectacle. Hypnosis turned a local mystery into an abduction saga
The greatest change in the story came not from a new physical discovery but from hypnotic sessions organised after journalists and UFO investigators became involved. During hypnosis, Zanfretta gave increasingly elaborate accounts of being taken aboard a craft, examined and confronted by giant non-human beings. The media now had far more vivid material than the original report of lights, fear and unusual figures.
A surviving 1979 recording of one session demonstrates why the material was so suitable for television. Instead of a dry summary, audiences could hear a distressed witness apparently reliving an encounter. The performance carried emotional force, even though emotional intensity is not a measure of factual accuracy. This distinction is central to understanding how Ligurian UFO lore grew. The original event had uncertainties: something frightened Zanfretta, colleagues responded, and authorities recorded information. The later alien-abduction narrative was much more detailed, but those details emerged through a technique that can increase confidence and narrative richness without reliably recovering accurate memories. Media accounts often combined the early investigation and the later hypnotic narrative as though they formed one continuous body of evidence. This created a powerful but misleading impression. The title itself widened the geographical claim. The events had been associated chiefly with Marzano, Torriglia, Propata and the mountainous hinterland, yet “UFO in Genoa?” connected the case to the region’s major city. For viewers outside Liguria, the simpler geographical label was easier to remember. Over time, “the Zanfretta case”, “the Genoa UFO case” and “the Torriglia abduction” became overlapping versions of the same cultural story.
Television reconstruction also gave the landscape a starring role. Dark roads, wooded slopes, isolated houses and mountain weather supplied visual atmosphere even when no direct record of the original event existed. Such images do not fabricate the location, but they can make uncertainty feel ominous. A difficult night-time environment becomes, through editing and narration, an apparently natural setting for an extraordinary encounter.
Later appearances kept renewing the claim. Zanfretta returned on programmes including the Maurizio Costanzo Show, Il bivio, Rebus, Ricomincio da qui and Mistero. These broadcasts mixed retrospective testimony, studio argument, location reconstruction and new claims about an alleged object or “sphere” connected with the encounters. Torriglia also hosted UFO meetings that drew enthusiasts and speakers to the place most closely associated with the story. This helps explain why the case overshadows almost every other Ligurian report. A weak photograph of a light has little narrative structure. Zanfretta’s story has a protagonist, repeated encounters, named investigators, official documents, dramatic creatures, recordings, locations and decades of media conflict. It is easier to dramatise, package and remember.
Social media revives weak sightings
Digital platforms changed the mechanics of Ligurian UFO reporting. Earlier stories usually passed through an editor, broadcaster or organised UFO group before reaching a large audience. Today, a short video or enlarged photograph can circulate before anyone establishes its date, direction, distance, camera settings or relationship to known aircraft and wildlife.
A revealing example occurred in July 2023, when an object photographed over Genoa Airport generated debate and was discussed as a possible UFO. The sequence is now familiar:
- an indistinct object is photographed or filmed;
- the most puzzling frame is isolated from the wider sequence;
- captions ask whether a UFO has appeared over Genoa;
- users invoke Zanfretta or Torriglia;
- reposting spreads faster than identification;
- the correction reaches a smaller or less engaged audience.
Research on Italian social-media communities has found that users often gather around information matching an existing narrative and pay less attention to contrary material. Applied cautiously to UFO content, this helps explain why an exciting first interpretation may survive even after a mundane explanation appears. Digital retellings also detach claims from their source hierarchy. Each repetition tends to preserve the most dramatic detail while dropping qualifications about how that detail was obtained.
At the same time, digital archives have one genuine advantage: they make old broadcasts, articles and disagreements easier to compare. The internet can preserve folklore, but it can also expose how the story changed.
Repetition strengthened the legend, not the proof
Later media coverage has strengthened several limited conclusions. It confirms that the Zanfretta case had substantial contemporary publicity, that named colleagues and officials were involved in recording aspects of the affair, and that Zanfretta maintained his broad account over many years. It also documents the social consequences he described, including ridicule and professional difficulty. Coverage has not produced equally strong support for the extraterrestrial interpretation. The most elaborate claims remain dependent on Zanfretta’s testimony, especially statements developed during hypnosis. Frequently cited physical details, such as disturbed ground, do not establish their cause. The story’s durability can therefore be explained without assuming that journalists invented the original incident or that Zanfretta was knowingly deceptive. A disturbing event may have occurred; the witness may have been sincere; colleagues may have observed genuine distress; and people in the area may have reported unusual lights. Media processes then selected the most memorable interpretation, encouraged further narrative development and repeatedly returned the resulting account to the public.
For readers assessing Liguria’s wider UFO history, this is the key lesson. Public prominence is not the same as evidential quality. A case can become culturally stronger while remaining factually unresolved. In Liguria, decades of newspaper reports, television appearances, fictional adaptations and online revivals transformed Zanfretta from the witness in one disputed incident into the central character of a regional UFO mythology. The media legacy is real and well documented; the alien encounter remains unproven.
