How Strong Is the Colcerasa Humanoid Story?
The region's most dramatic 1954 encounter survives as a brief catalogue entry with no names, physical traces or original testimony.

Introduction
The Colcerasa story is one of the most dramatic claims in Marche’s UFO history: two twelve-year-old shepherd boys allegedly saw a barrel-shaped object on the ground near Monte Sgaggia on 25 October 1954, with three tiny, large-headed figures beside it. Yet the case is much weaker than its vivid details suggest. The fullest surviving narrative was reconstructed more than twenty years later, while the commonly available catalogue entry contains no testimony, photographs, trace evidence or investigation file. Different catalogues even disagree about the date.
That does not prove that the witnesses invented the episode. Contemporary newspapers apparently reported some version of it, and one witness continued to defend the story decades later. It does mean that the claim cannot be treated as a well-documented landing. Colcerasa matters chiefly because it shows how a sparse local report can develop into established UFO folklore while its original evidential foundations remain difficult to inspect.
What the surviving account claims
The Centro Ufologico Nazionale’s regional catalogue reduces the incident to a single striking line. At about 5 p.m. on 25 October 1954, at Colcerasa near Cingoli in Macerata province, a small barrel-like object allegedly landed and three humanoids with enormous heads and metallic suits were seen nearby. A much longer version comes from material attributed to an investigation conducted in December 1975 by the Ancona-based Gruppo Bilancia. According to that account, investigators located the two men who said they had witnessed the event as boys. They recalled tending sheep on Monte Sgaggia and returning towards two small fires they had lit earlier. Their dog was barking and the flock had moved away. In this retrospective testimony, the figures were described as roughly 35 centimetres tall, with heads disproportionately large and flattened in shape. The main witness could not see their faces and acknowledged that what he took to be heads might have been helmets. He described their clothing as close-fitting, dark metallic and slightly glossy. The account then becomes more spectacular. The figures supposedly disappeared behind the object, which rose with a whistling sound. At an estimated height of about 20 metres, it allegedly released a ball of fire that exploded before reaching the ground, producing a strong gust of wind. This distinction between the witnesses is important. The humanoid description rests mainly on one person’s view. The second witness supports only the broader claim that an unusual object departed with a noise and an apparent explosion. Calling Colcerasa a straightforward “two-witness humanoid encounter” therefore overstates the degree of agreement.
The evidence that is missing
The central difficulty is not simply that the story sounds extraordinary. It is that the surviving evidence cannot be checked at the level such a claim requires.
The detailed narrative available online derives from a typed report prepared after the 1975 interviews and later reproduced in a 1980 Italian UFO case collection. The interview took place approximately twenty-one years after the alleged incident. Long-term memory can preserve the outline of a frightening childhood experience, but details such as dimensions, exact distances, colours, directions and sequences are especially vulnerable to later reconstruction. The account says that local officials, Carabinieri, journalists and even scientific police became involved. It also names several newspapers that allegedly covered the event, including Gazzettino Sera, Il Resto del Carlino and L’Appennino Camerte. One cited source is the 26 October 1954 edition of Gazzettino Sera, which would at least establish that the story was circulating immediately after the claimed encounter. Most notably, there is no publicly available evidence of:
- marks where the object supposedly rested;
- scorching, damaged vegetation or debris from the reported fireball;
- photographs taken at the site;
- measurements made immediately after the event;
- a preserved Carabinieri or police-science file;
- medical examination of the boys;
- an independent statement recorded from the second witness in 1954;
- a documented attempt to identify aircraft, agricultural machinery, explosives or other local activity.
The later account mentions an elderly woman who reportedly saw an illuminated object pass overhead after the alleged departure. This could be supporting evidence for something moving through the area, but it does not independently confirm either a landing or the presence of humanoid figures. The catalogue record itself illustrates the problem. In the national chronology, Colcerasa appears as one row among many, marked as a landing-type event but without the underlying narrative or evidential attachments. Conflicting dates weaken the chain
A well-established case should have a stable date, especially when contemporary newspapers are said to exist. Colcerasa does not.

By contrast, the INTCAT humanoid catalogue lists the Colcerasa event as occurring on 23 November 1954. This discrepancy may reflect an early printing error, confusion introduced by foreign catalogues or the merging of separate references. Until the original newspaper coverage is placed in a clear chronological sequence, readers cannot be certain which later catalogue has correctly transmitted the date.
The source history is similarly untidy. One reconstruction says the episode received little attention at the time and was recovered in detail only in 1975. The same reconstruction also says that numerous journalists and authorities arrived soon afterwards and lists several contemporary newspapers. Those statements are not necessarily incompatible: a story can receive brief publicity without producing a thorough investigation. But they demonstrate why the actual 1954 clippings and official documents matter more than later summaries.
Could an ordinary event explain it?
There is not enough surviving information to identify a specific conventional cause. Several possibilities can nevertheless be considered without forcing a conclusion.
A small agricultural or mechanical object might have appeared unfamiliar to children in fading autumn light, particularly when viewed partly through vegetation. The witness initially compared the figures to dark animals and said their backs were turned. The reported whistle, fireball and explosion might suggest pyrotechnics, discarded military material, a flare or another explosive device. Yet the story gives no physical residue, crater, burn mark or injury that would allow such an explanation to be tested. Nor does the surviving file identify military exercises or local blasting on that afternoon.
A helicopter has sometimes been suggested in catalogue commentary on similar cases, but it is a poor fit for an object described as only about 1.5 metres long. It would require either a major error in perceived size or a later distortion of the description. Without the original scene measurements, that possibility remains speculative rather than explanatory.
A fabricated childhood tale is also possible, but the accessible record does not establish a hoax. The two witnesses reportedly told their families promptly, and the event appears to have entered the press soon afterwards. That supports an early origin for the story, not its extraordinary interpretation. People can sincerely report a misunderstood event, and a genuine memory of fear does not prove that the perceived object was an exotic craft.
Why folklore and case evidence differ
As folklore, Colcerasa is exceptionally durable. It has children in an isolated rural landscape, frightened animals, miniature beings, a strange machine and a fiery departure. These are memorable narrative elements, and later retellings naturally preserve them more readily than uncertainties about viewing angle, source dates or missing records.
As evidence, however, the case is fragmented. Its strongest features are that two named local people were later interviewed, one gave a detailed and internally coherent account, and some contemporary press coverage is cited. Later reporting has added colour rather than verification. A 2014 retrospective quoted the principal witness repeating the essentials of the story at the age of 72: three very small beings, a cylindrical object, a rapid departure and an exploding fireball. It also repeated claims of Carabinieri questioning and national publicity. The fairest assessment is therefore that Colcerasa is unresolved but weakly evidenced. There is enough source history to distinguish it from a purely modern internet invention, but not enough reliable documentation to establish that a physical landing occurred, still less that non-human beings were present. Within Marche’s UFO record, its real value lies in the contrast between narrative power and evidential fragility: the region’s most dramatic encounter is also one of its hardest to verify.
