Why Liguria Became Italy's UFO Coast
Liguria’s UFO history is dominated by one extraordinary but disputed case: the experiences reported by security guard Pier Fortunato Zanfretta in the hills behind Genoa from December 1978 onwards.

Introduction
Beyond Zanfretta, Liguria has produced a long stream of less spectacular reports: lights over the coast, objects photographed near Genoa Airport, luminous spheres in the Savona hinterland and periodic clusters amplified by local news and social media. Most lack radar confirmation, trace evidence or independent documentation. Liguria therefore matters less as a region of proven unexplained aircraft than as a clear example of how genuine uncertainty, difficult terrain, aviation activity, weak imagery and media storytelling can combine to create a durable regional UFO tradition.
The 1978 case that defined Ligurian UFO history
On the night of 6 December 1978, Zanfretta was patrolling near Marzano, a rural settlement within the municipality of Torriglia, north-east of Genoa. According to the account that became public, he approached a property after noticing unusual lights and believing that burglars might be present. Hypnosis made the story richer but the evidence weaker
The most elaborate parts of the Zanfretta narrative emerged after journalists and UFO investigators became involved. Accounts of the Zanfretta sessions also indicate that investigators discussed possible questions and interpretations around the hypnotised witness. This does not prove that Zanfretta deliberately invented his story. A witness may be honest, frightened and mistaken at the same time. Zanfretta later claimed that he possessed a mysterious sphere given to him by the beings, but the object was never produced for independent examination. Why 1978 changed official handling in Italy
Zanfretta’s first report occurred during a major Italian wave of UFO interest. Under the current procedure, a person reporting an unidentified aerial event can complete an official form and submit it through the Carabinieri. The Air Force examines whether a technical or natural explanation can be identified. A case remains classified as unidentified when the available investigation cannot establish such an explanation. This distinction is particularly important in Liguria. Many reports involve brief lights over the sea or hills, where distance, height and direction are difficult to estimate. Unless a report contains precise timings, direction of travel, duration, weather conditions and independent sensor data, even the Air Force may have too little information to make a positive identification.

Liguria’s geography encourages both observation and misinterpretation. The region is a narrow coastal strip backed by steep mountains. Western Liguria also contains an Italian Air Force radar installation at Capo Mele, near Andora, used in national air-surveillance and aircraft-tracking systems. Its presence is sometimes invoked to give nearby UFO reports a military connection. The existence of a radar station, however, does not demonstrate that a particular light was tracked. Modern sighting clusters along the western coast

These reports are useful for mapping local interest, but the published material does not demonstrate a verified aerial phenomenon shared by every witness. Counts assembled by private UFO groups may combine cases of very different quality: a detailed report from several observers can sit beside a brief phone clip, a distant point of light or an account submitted years after the event. The concentration around Genoa and Savona may also have ordinary causes. Those provinces contain larger populations than much of the region, more observers, greater media coverage and active local investigators to whom witnesses can report. Several modern sources of confusion deserve particular attention:
- Satellites: recently launched satellite groups can appear as a straight procession of evenly spaced lights.
- Aircraft and helicopters: bright forward-facing lights may hide the familiar shape and coloured navigation lamps.
- Drones: slow movement, hovering and sudden changes of direction are no longer exceptional characteristics.
- Lanterns and balloons: wind-borne lights can appear to travel together or change formation.
- Planets and stars: atmospheric turbulence near the horizon can make bright objects shimmer, change colour or seem to move.
- Birds and insects on video: a nearby object crossing a zoomed image can resemble a fast, distant craft.
These explanations do not automatically resolve every Ligurian report. They show why imagery without scale, metadata or independent observation carries little weight.
Media attention has often outgrown the underlying evidence
The Zanfretta story moved quickly from a local incident to national entertainment. Television appearances, magazine features, hypnosis recordings, books and later documentaries gave the case an unusually long cultural life. Repetition made its most dramatic details familiar, but familiarity should not be confused with corroboration.
Modern coverage can produce the same effect more rapidly. A short video may be reported first as a “mystery”, then repeated by several outlets before any technical analysis appears. Once an extraterrestrial interpretation has been included in headlines and social posts, a later identification as a bird, aircraft or satellite attracts less attention.
There is also a selection effect. Ordinary explanations rarely become part of regional folklore, while unresolved or visually strange cases are retold for decades. How strong is Liguria’s overall UFO record?
Liguria has one landmark case, several recurring observation zones and a continuing culture of public reporting. It does not have publicly available evidence showing repeated incursions by extraordinary craft.
The Zanfretta incident remains historically important but evidentially disputed. The initial distress, police attention and reports of lights justify treating it as a genuine event in Italian UFO history. The alien figures and abduction narrative are weakly supported because they rely on a single witness and were expanded through suggestive hypnosis. Later claims did not produce testable physical evidence.

Recent clusters of luminous spheres are best described as reported but not established. They may contain individual events that remain unresolved, but the published material does not justify treating the cluster as one coherent phenomenon. Increased reporting can reflect publicity, observer numbers and new aerial technologies as much as a real increase in unusual objects.
Liguria’s UFO history is therefore most revealing as a history of evidence under pressure. A frightened witness can be sincere without being correct. Several people can report lights without seeing the same thing. A police file can confirm that a claim was investigated without confirming its extraordinary interpretation. A case can remain unidentified because the evidence is inadequate, not because every ordinary explanation has been eliminated.
The lasting regional picture
Liguria occupies an important place in Italian UFO culture because the Torriglia case joined a vivid personal story to the nationwide sighting wave of 1978. It helped turn the wooded Genoese hinterland into a recognised setting for Italian encounter lore and remains the region’s natural reference point whenever new lights are reported.
Later evidence has not strengthened the central extraterrestrial claim. Instead, advances in memory research have weakened confidence in the hypnotically recovered portions of Zanfretta’s testimony, while digital-video analysis has shown how easily birds and other nearby objects can imitate distant craft. Its best-known incident remains unresolved at the level of what first frightened Zanfretta, but its later alien-abduction narrative is too dependent on unreliable reconstruction to carry comparable weight.
