Where Is Zanfretta's Alleged Alien Sphere?
Ground marks and a claimed alien sphere attracted attention, but neither provided verifiable material evidence with a secure chain of custody.

Introduction
The physical claims in the Zanfretta case sound, at first, more persuasive than the later accounts recovered under hypnosis. Police recorded flattened grass, unusually large shoe-like impressions and reports of heat affecting a man, his clothing and a car. Zanfretta later said that alleged extraterrestrials had entrusted him with a transparent sphere containing a suspended, luminous pyramid. Had that object been produced under controlled conditions, it could have transformed Liguria’s most famous UFO story.
It never was. The ground marks were documented as shapes, not identified through scientific testing, and later sceptical enquiries offered ordinary possible causes. The supposed sphere remained hidden, was never placed in independent custody and yielded no usable photograph, sample or laboratory result. The physical claims therefore add colour and historical interest to the case, but they do not provide verifiable material evidence of an unknown craft or non-human visitors.
Flattened grass and reported traces
The strongest contemporary documentation concerns the night of 6–7 December 1978 at Marzano di Torriglia. A Carabinieri report states that an inspection found a horseshoe-shaped impression in the grass near the villa where Zanfretta reported his encounter. It was described as roughly two metres across and three metres long. This matters because the marks were not merely added to the story decades later. They appear in a police document written close to the events. What the documents establish, however, is limited. They show that disturbed vegetation and unusually shaped impressions were observed. They do not establish what made them. The surviving report gives dimensions and visual descriptions, but it does not present soil analysis, botanical examination, chemical residues, radiation measurements, casting of the impressions or a comparison with known local causes. A mark can be genuine without being evidence of a spacecraft.
The grass formation is especially ambiguous. A later critical review, produced with input from researchers associated with Italy’s Centre for UFO Studies, reported that the flattened area corresponded to a place where the villa’s owners tethered a horse. The same review argued that the supposed giant footprints were visually indistinguishable from ordinary depressions or puddles. The official wording also deserves attention. The report calls the grass mark horseshoe-shaped; it does not say that investigators identified it as a landing trace. That stronger interpretation came from the surrounding UFO narrative. The difference is important: “a curved area of flattened grass was present” is an observation, while “an alien craft made it” is a conclusion requiring additional evidence.
Heat, clothing and the car
Accounts of Zanfretta’s condition supplied another apparent physical anomaly. Colleagues reportedly found him sweating and unusually warm despite severe winter weather. During the later Scoffera episode, his car was described as having warm bodywork, as though exposed to summer sunlight. Yet no instrument readings are supplied. “Hot”, “warm” and “feverish” are witnesses’ impressions unless supported by measured temperatures, times and environmental conditions. A person in acute distress can sweat heavily, while a vehicle’s engine, heater and enclosed passenger compartment provide ordinary heat sources. These observations may support the view that something frightening happened to him. They do not distinguish among panic, exertion, time spent in a heated vehicle, illness or an extraordinary external energy source. In evidential terms, they are corroboration of distress, not proof of its cause.
The sphere claim and its disappearance
The alleged sphere was potentially far more important than grass or footprints because it was said to be a portable artefact. In versions of the story circulated by Zanfretta and his supporters, it was a transparent sphere containing a golden or luminous pyramid, sometimes described as rotating or suspended. One account says it arrived inside a box about 60 centimetres wide and was originally intended for the prominent UFO researcher J. The claim developed well after the original December 1978 incident and belongs to Zanfretta’s extended sequence of alleged encounters. He said that he had hidden the object in a secret place and that it could harm anyone or anything approaching it. He also claimed that attempts to photograph it produced only points of light or completely dark images. The most damaging fact for the sphere claim comes from a sympathetic source. Di Stefano, who spent years investigating and publicising the case, wrote that, as far as he knew, nobody had succeeded in seeing the sphere. In 2007, the sphere returned to television discussion when photographs and video said to depict it were presented on the Italian programme Rebus. Contemporary summaries state that the resulting images were dark and proved nothing. Zanfretta later said he could no longer reach the place where the object was stored. There is consequently no public record of an independent researcher holding the sphere, measuring it, opening its container, taking controlled photographs, obtaining material samples or submitting it to a recognised laboratory. Nor is there a documented transfer from the alleged place of discovery to secure storage. Without the object, even basic questions remain unanswered: whether it exists, what it is made from, when it was manufactured and whether the photographed container—if any—was the object originally described.
Why chain of custody matters
A chain of custody is the documented history of an item from collection through storage, transfer and examination. It records who possessed it, when it changed hands and what was done to it. For a claimed alien artefact, a credible minimum procedure would have required:
- immediate photographs of the object in its original location;
- named witnesses present during recovery;
- measurements, packaging and tamper-evident seals;
- a written log of every person who handled it;
- controlled imaging before destructive tests;
- analysis by more than one independent laboratory;
- publication of methods, raw results and retained samples.
None of this is known to have occurred. The sphere remained under the claimant’s exclusive control—or was said to remain in a hidden place known only to him. That is not merely a technical weakness. It prevents investigators from establishing that the item shown in any later photograph was the same object allegedly received years earlier.
Chain of custody would not automatically prove extraterrestrial origin. Most mysterious artefacts turn out to be industrial components, artistic objects, minerals, glass, polymers or misunderstood consumer products. Its purpose would be to make the object testable and to prevent the claim changing whenever a difficulty arose. The absence of that process leaves the sphere in the category of testimony rather than physical evidence.
What the official file does and does not confirm
The Genoa court file confirms that the matter entered the legal-administrative system. The Carabinieri sent a report concerning unidentified flying objects and humanoids, and the file was eventually archived because no elements of a criminal offence were found. That decision was not a scientific judgement that an extraterrestrial encounter had occurred. The police report records Zanfretta’s claims, his distressed condition, the ground marks and reports of unusual lights in the wider Torriglia area. It also notes that details of an alleged abduction were relayed to the officer by a UFO investigator who had attended a hypnosis session. Readers should therefore resist two opposite errors. It is wrong to say that there was no physical observation at all: officers did record marks on the ground. It is equally wrong to say that the authorities authenticated alien landing traces or an extraterrestrial object. They did neither.
The physical claims in balance
The Zanfretta case contains physical claims of very different quality. Flattened grass and roadside impressions were contemporary observations, but their cause was never securely established and ordinary explanations remained available. Reports of heat support the reality of Zanfretta’s distress more readily than they support exposure to an unknown craft. The sphere was potentially decisive, yet it was never independently produced or examined.
Later reporting weakened rather than strengthened the material case. Decades of publicity created repeated opportunities to document the alleged artefact properly. Instead, the evidence remained dark images, changing access claims and descriptions supplied by the witness. Within Liguria’s UFO history, the missing sphere is therefore important less as an object than as an evidential dividing line. It shows the difference between a dramatic physical claim and physical evidence. A trace becomes useful when it is measured, sampled and compared with alternatives. An artefact becomes evidence when it can be secured, tested and retested. The Zanfretta story never crossed either threshold.
